The Beatles by briggs54

*INCOMPLETE LIST*

Is self parody still annoying if it is conscious self-parody? The Beatles prove the answer is yes!

Here's a great article by Pierro Scaruffi on why the Beatles really were not that great. I don't agree with all the points he makes, nor his ratings of Beatles albums, but he certainly makes some excellent points and everyone who has 5+ Beatles albums on their Best Albums of All Time Chart should read it.

http://scaruffi.com/vol1/beatles.html

*Disclaimer: Scaruffi makes a fool of himself more than once in this article, but the general sentiment is on the right track.

Some people like to talk about the Beatles inventing all kinds of musical genres, but those kinds of people generally go way too far. The Beatles were certainly influential, but their influence and popularity originated from their early records which were mostly pop songs with a few minor innovations. Here's a good example of this in something I read the other day: "The Beatles invented punk, just listen to Helter Skelter"! The Beatles invented punk? Roger Daltrey sang My Generation in 1965 while the Beatles were still doing Rubber Soul, an album which did some influential things in terms of production because, you know, they were The Beatles and had the money for such experiments, but in the case of developing the "punk" sound The Who were years ahead of the Beatles.

Anyways, I could make arguments like this for a lot of "The Beatles are the best band ever and influenced everybody" type statements but it's kind of pointless. The big question is, if you think the Beatles are mediocre, why make an entire list devoted to them? Although there seem to be a few Scaruffian disciples on this site, the general sentiment appears to be pro-Beatles and pro-Radiohead (whom I will probably get around to making a list about later). The purpose of this list is to let people know how I feel about The Beatles music in general, and to make it more clear as to why I only have Abbey Road on my 60's list as opposed to 5 or 6 or their albums on my main list which, to a lot of people, might seem like a glaring omission. The Beatles certainly made some excellent songs, they were certainly influential, and they definitely sold a ton of records. Did they make any perfect records? I submit that they did not. Do they deserve more than one or two spots on anyone's best albums ever chart? I honestly don't know how anyone with a reasonable knowledge of music history can say they do. Of course, the word "reasonable" is highly subjective here. Please feel free to praise, express displeasure, or ask why I care, but most of all: please please go look at other charts.

My Ideal Beatles Album:

Side 1:
Tomorrow Never Knows
Strawberry Fields
Blackbird
Within You Without You
Dear Prudence
I Want You (She's So Heavy)
Helter Skelter

Side 2:
Abbey Road Medley (Polythene Pam-Her Majesty)
A Day In The Life
Revolution 9

Ok the Beatles are overrated. But, at least 66% of their songs are decent or great (the others are practically silly soft AC).

I agree with you list, certainly not with your choice of "fillers". Love Martha, my Dear and Honey Pie for example.
I also agree, that the reputation of the Beatles is better than they really deserve. But to my mind it is not so grotesquely out of proportion as in case of Radiohead.
As to Scaruffi, I really love the guy. He is brilliant, I like his political stuff the best, but I can read nearly everything he writes and learn something new. But his view on the Beatles is really ridiculous. I put it right in the same category as Nabokov’s claim that Dostoyevsky is a bad writer. You cannot take it seriously.
