"Deerhoof was the band that slapped me with the truth that a rock band could be anything I wanted it to be. Any tempo, any sonic texture, any word, any varied form of humor (musical, lyrical, or otherwise). Any subject, any object. (Basketball.) Any level of insanity (musical, lyrical or otherwise). Deerhoof was, and still is, an impossible combination of things. A short woman with a Japanese accent laying down bass lines that shake tushes while sing-songing dadaist adult nursery rhymes. An inarguable genius of a drummer who presses up against the beat just to see how late or early he can hit before the whole groove collapses. I can’t tell John and Ed’s guitars apart. It doesn’t matter, I don’t think; the two of them serve the music before their egos. It’s the Television-like weave. It takes up sonic space when a song deserves a shock of color, or shrieks riffs when it’s time to drive forward. A two-headed, million-fingered guitar-playing organism sharing the same heart and guts and gore."

As soon as it seems like Newsom has explored a musical idea to its fullest possible extent, the song will suddenly develop in a way you couldn't possibly have seen coming, but couldn't possibly improve on. Then she does it again, and again, for two hours. Her lyrics are something I'd be happy to print and frame on my wall. This is outlandishly good songwriting.

The Books are a unique take on plunderphonics. Their samples have a kind of clumsy sincerity to them, and they combine those samples with their own instrumentation and vocals in a way I can't really compare to anything else I've heard. This album is the closest they've come to traditional songwriting, but even their straightforward folk songs are flowing with unusual textures and utilise unconventional mic placement -- there's a strong attention to where things are placed in the mix, but the rules they follow are of their own devising. Conversely, even their most experimental compositions still retain a folksy warmth. Their sense of rhythm is impeccable too.

If this chart was a wild egg, I would break it slowly and drink its multicolored yolk slowly, revealing an odd sweet hallucinogenic taste, since when are my fingers infinite worms anyway?
This is beautiful, would like to understand the dreamy machine inside your head? maybe it would break all the spell? I love this chart, cheers.

Deerhoof are nuts, I love them already. At first the album just seems like crazy noise pop with kooky vocals but as the album progresses it grows on you, well it did me. There are some definite melodies and interesting sounds. I heard Stereolab before but this is unique. Very refreshing, Dave. I also checked out the mellow tones of Burial and I gave the Talk Talk album another spin. I had heard that one, it's ace man. So thanks for introducing Deerhoof. Next I will listen to an album of theirs with Mr Rodriguez in it. If I get time I can check out other albums in your chart.
