I'm not sure I've commented on Lazarus at all during this tourney. I missed the Bowie discography discussion in the last thread but Blackstar is definitely an album that's grown on me over the years. I think it's a bit scattershot, but the title track, Lazarus, and I Can't Give Everything Away (easily my favorite track) are all great. I think the opening minute or so of Lazarus is phenomenal, but for what it is musically I actually think it's a bit too long. Those opening lyrics rightly sealed its place in history though.
Flesh Without Blood is a song that I would have nominated had it not already been picked, and gets my vote here. I don't disagree that it's not as inventive as some of her other songs, but the reason I liked Art Angels so much was because it felt a lot like a mainstream pop album with bits of weirdness scattered throughout. I think this track embodies that feeling a lot. _________________ And it's hard to be a human being. And it's harder as anything else.
'Lazarus' for me, which in spite of my critiques earlier in the tournament is still a very, very good song with lots of endearing and memorable qualities, and a particularly fantastic vocal performance. As stated elsewhere, it isn't quite top tier Bowie, but it's more than enough to earn my vote against Grimes doing Grimes with diminishing returns. _________________ 2021 in full effect.
