I missed the news a couple days ago, but Greta Gerwig was announced as the 2024 Cannes jury president.

Having watched her since her mumblecore/indie roots through Greenberg/Frances Ha era, etc etc, to Ladybird, this feels huge. Wouldn't have ever expected her to reach these sort of heights so fast, especially coming out of that mid-late 00s indie scene. Maybe after Barbie I figured she'd be a good choice for the jury, but presiding over it is quite the accolade (especially considering she's never competed).

This is an odd thing to say, but I'm oddly proud of her. It's exciting to watch these sort of trajectories happen in the industry.

Not a "film" per se, but National Theatre Live did a run of Andrew Scott's one-man Uncle Vanya in cinemas this weekend and, having seen it, I kinda think he might be the world's greatest actor who isn't dead.

Xavier Dolan announced as the Un Certain Regard president. (Yay Canada).

Anyway, lineup so far—

All We Imagine as Light / Payal Kapadia / India
Beating Hearts / Gilles Lellouche / France, Belgium
Anora / Sean Baker / United States
The Apprentice / Ali Abbasi / Canada, Denmark, Ireland, United States
Bird / Andrea Arnold / United Kingdom, France, Germany, United States
Caught by the Tides 风流一代 / Jia Zhangke / China
Emilia Perez / Jacques Audiard / France, Mexico
The Girl with the Needle / Magnus von Horn / Denmark, Poland, Sweden
Grand Tour / Miguel Gomes / Portugal, Italy, France
Kinds of Kindness / Yorgos Lanthimos / United Kingdom, Ireland, United States

Limonov: The Ballad / Kirill Serebrennikov / France, Italy, Spain, Russia
Marcello Mio / Christophe Honoré / France, Italy
Megalopolis / Francis Ford Coppola / United States
Motel Destino / Karim Aïnouz / Brazil, France
Oh, Canada / Paul Schrader / United States
Parthenope / Paolo Sorrentino / Italy, France
The Shrouds / David Cronenberg / France, Canada
The Substance / Coralie Fargeat / United States
Wild Diamond / Agathe Riedinger / France

Shocking amount of English-language titles (over half? I think) (... is that a record?). Looking forward to the bolded the most. Surprised seeing Coralie Fargeat and Magnus von Horn make the cut (both relatively out of nowhere)— hope their films live up to the slot. I wish Furiosa was in comp... likewise the new Guy Maddin (stars are a-list cast Blanchett, Vikander, Charles Dance and Denis Menochet). On the flipside, I'm surprised The Balconettes didn't land in-comp, but I think it's best for Merlant that it didn't.

A fair amount of directors in the mix are almost in the 'overdue for a Palme D'or' category— Cronenberg, Sorrentino, Lanthimos, Zhangke, Arnold— hoping at least one of them knocks it out of the park (*cough* Arnold *cough*).

Poster for 2024 is excellent— frame from Rhapsody in August.

Three more films were added to the line-up as well.

Also announced was that Studio Ghibli will receive an honorary Palme D'or. I think this is an excellent nod to the house (as apposed to just Miyazaki being recognized, etc). They've been a little trigger happy giving them out since 2021, but I still think it's a admirable choice. Shame they were never in actual competition. I imagine works like Grave of the Fireflies or Howl's Moving Castle would've had strong odds at landing the Palme in their given years.

Cannes aside for 2 seconds (what an odd first few days), just want to give Challengers a quick shout— an exceptional output from Guadagnino and the main trio. I think it's his best film yet, and one of the best of the decade so far. Only my third 9/10 I've given to a film in the past year. The chemistry between Zendaya, Faist and O'Connor was a breath of fresh air, and the tension Justin Kuritzkes managed to concoct was Shakespearean. Not to mention Reznor + Ross coming in hot with the bangers. Real treat of a film, and well deserving of consideration for a Best Picture nomination come the next Academy Awards. And that trashnado? Phenomenal.

Sayombhu Mukdeeprom is so good. I'm so glad Luca, Gomes and (of course) Weerasethakul have confidence in him. Grand Tour premieres in a few days.

And shoutout to Wes Anderson for the here'n'there inspo. The font from The Grand Budapest Hotel and the Britten needle drops did not go unnoticed. Wink
