I don't know if anyone is going to be interested in this, but it looks like this album and The Soft Bulletin are currently almost in a "tie" in their overall BEA ranking, with this one at #119 and TSB at #120. Personally, I've always considered Yoshimi to be overrated, and if I absolutely had to theorize I'd say it might be ranked quite a bit lower if it had been released in the 1990s. I suspect it appears high up on a lot more decade charts because of that (perhaps because the 2000s were rather less awesome than the 1990s in terms of great albums, due to various factors including the advent of downloading, the effect of music blogging on artists, and more stuff being produced on low-budget home recording gear). The Flaming Lips also started to put a lot more effort into their visuals with this album, and "Do You Realize?" was a fairly big hit for them (at least by their standards), so those things probably factor in too.

I'm sure many of you will vigorously disagree with this assessment, and call me a "nincompoop" and the like. That's fine; I just want to say that I do like the album, I just can't otherwise square the idea of it being more well-regarded than The Soft Bulletin — which I currently have ranked as my #12 album of all time.

I listened to this 2 hours before it was posted as Album Of The Day. I have special powers.

And hey...I personally prefer Yoshimi over The Soft Bulletin. We all have our own reasons and our own personal ears. You're not wrong. Neither of us is.

Overrated or underrated, I love this album quite a lot. Maybe not as passionately as I did when I was a teenager, but it still holds a special place in my heart as a thoroughly moving collection of songs about loss and mortality. This and The Soft Bulletin are a one-two punch of an artistic peak for the The Flaming Lips. Can't fault either as anyone's favorite from the band.

Track picks
1. Fight Test
3. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt.1
5. In The Morning Of The Magicians
9. Do You Realize??
10. All We Have Is Now

a sacred memory of mine: jamming out on the title track with friends at a (most of us musicians) birthday party where we all passed a guitar around and rocked out back in high school.
