Possibly my fave jungle crew currently working. This debut collects some of their best singles of the past few years and has plenty of new bangers as well.
Haven't run into Stetson yet (soon), but these two are excellent— Nala's record is quite reminiscent of FP/LSO/PS Promises, but coincidentally has a slightly more Stetson approach to the horn. It's a really cool record. One of my favourites of the year. And Jaubi just go hard. Really great gem of a group.
New Nick Cave is awesome. Particularly the record's bookends. Bad Seeds are in their 5th decade (!) of making great records. which is quite the feat (and slightly difficult to comprehend... they always seem so fresh).
Anyway. Here's some recent picks I don't think you should miss—
Cicada write beautiful compositions. Chamber music. This is a really full-bodied work, bit more polished compared to his last, a larger mix, bit more robust, but truly lovely. An ode to the shoreline.
A mixing/composition marvel of noises and blips and clips and clacks and sirens and clangs and dings and drones and clattering. Street harmony. Abstract atmospheres tied together with twine and a cello bow.
This is dope. Based on the cover (Shoegaze-y) and band name (ØKSE) and country (Norway), you probably wouldn't guess this experimental Scandinavian jazz record has features from Billy Woods, Elucid and Cavalier, but—
Really rich, vigorous, punchy record. Great verses too. Think something along the lines of Fire! Orchestra meets BadBadNotGood. It'll be climbing higher on my chart for the year for sure.
Sissoko's been busy! This collab with flautist Nicole Mitchell really compliments both musicians excellently. The two gel really well, and the vibe is great. Finding this one slipped under the radar, but hoping people give it a shot. Says something about Sissoko when I can't even say this is his best release of the year.
An excellent new effort from Japanese vibraphonist Masayoshi Fujita. So clean. Makes you float. In clouds. In water. On land. You're in it and somewhere above it all somehow at the same time. Makes you forget about everything else for a sec.
And can't say this is new— it's a recording from 1972 (give-or-take)— but this remaster/reissue/archival release (one of those?) is some of the finest, cleanest, fattest, gamelan I've ever heard, and deserves to be a staple showcase of the genre. Glad it was dusted off.
Sophie Died in 2021. The Album She Left Behind Is Now Complete.
“Sophie,” a new LP by the visionary hyperpop producer, traces an arc from introspection to pop pleasures to thoughts of eternity. It will be her final release.
September 20th-I'll See You In My Dreams from Mason Ramsey
To me, the day can't get here fast enough!!!
God bless you and Mason always!!!
Holly (a girl who only loves him more every day)
Really good album! Much better than I expected, and recommended to anyone who wants to hear a blend of Nashville sound & traditional pop revival with good vocals. Blue Over You and Cowboys Always Come Home are my favorite tracks so far.
