- Post subject: This DVD Came With My Album!
|
One of the cool things about having a collection on CD is that sometimes, the album comes with a bonus disc...a DVD. Special or deluxe editions, or sometimes it just comes with it. This is different from bonus tracks. The content isn't tacked on to the end of the CD. And it's mostly visual content...music videos and such. So I thought this would be a good place to explore some of this bonus extra that comes on DVD's.
The one I grabbed today is from this album:

Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico...by Big Boi
It came in a digipack, and states Deluxe Edition on the cover. The bonus disc is a DVD that contains five music videos from the album. Big Boi was not the flamboyant half of OutKast, so the videos aren't particularly flashy, or even very well made. Most of the content is a camera on Big Boi (or whoever is rapping / singing) waist high. These videos aren't the most creative, but what is nice is that you get visuals to go along with some of the songs. The tracks are:
Shutterbugg (Feat. Cutty)
Follow Us (Feat. Vonnegutt)
Fo Yo Sorrows (Feat. George Clinton, Too $hort & Sam Cris)
General Patton
Shine Blockas (Feat. Gucci Mane)
Kind of a nice plus to have with the album! _________________ Musicians play gigs.

Noticed that this album came with a DVD...

Lemonade by Beyoncé
Mind blown. I've always really liked this album. The DVD changes everything. I was not aware that she had made a film to go along with it. This hour plus long video is included with the cd. I now want everyone to take their albums to this level. This isn't just a few videos of songs from the record. This is a freaking movie. And it's amazing.
Visually, this is stunning and beautiful. This is music video as truly an art form. Beyonce recites bits of poetry between each section that leads you into the next stage written by Warsan Shire. The film addresses the stages of not just infidelity and pain, but also speaks of feminism, strength and race. The film gives the songs new and different life. Beyonce herself is magnificent.
I want more albums like this. This is a game changer for me...and kudos to Beyonce for making such a bold step, and for showing that she's far more artistic than I ever thought she was. _________________ Musicians play gigs.

Sugar Mountain - Live At Canterbury Hou...Neil Young
Part of the Neil Young Archives series, this album is a really terrific recording of a solo acoustic concert in 1968.
The DVD? Because there was no video of the concert, the DVD is actually the album...just on DVD. With only a single picture. I guess it's a plus because you can play these with better sound settings...but as far as any kind of bonus material, there is none. Except for a five minute trailer for the Archive box set, there's nothing here to be excited about. Want the DVD? I'd just buy the DVD. _________________ Musicians play gigs.

Just out of my own CD collection, the obvious one that comes to mind is this:

I Often Dream Of Trains In New York by Robyn Hitchcock
It's a live album, and both the regular edition and the Special Deluxe Limited Edition came with a DVD video of the show. But obviously everyone wanted the Special Deluxe Limited Edition because that came with a phenakistoscope — except you had to assemble the phenakistoscope yourself, which meant cutting up some of the packaging. I believe this is the only CD or DVD ever released with a phenakistoscope included, but maybe that's just as well. The reason it "comes to mind" so readily is because the phenakistoscope packaging makes it too big to fit in my CD shelves with all the other CDs, so instead it sits on top of the shelf where I see it all the time. Very clever guy, Robyn Hitchcock. He should get higher chart rankings here, but I can understand how people might be a little put off by that whole phenakistoscope thing, plus all the songs about insects and fish.

Well, leave it to Robyn Hitchcock. I've always liked his music. He is a strange duck, though. His obsession with Syd Barrett runs deep! _________________ Musicians play gigs.

Well, that's what happens with ducks. You throw them in the water and feed them some cracked corn or some birdseed, and next thing you know the band they're in are playing different tunes, and it's just a huge mess all around.
Just for reference purposes, Discogs lists 4,018 Master Release entries that are tagged as albums and include DVD-Video discs, and 386 that include Blu-Rays. Those numbers don't include DVD/Blu-Ray surround-sound remixes though, like the ones Steven Wilson does for bands like Yes, King Crimson, XTC, Jethro Tull, Ultravox, and so on (presumably because reissues aren't considered "master releases."
Apparently there was a deluxe version of Teen Dream by Beach House that included a DVD with videos of just about every song on the album, so there's one I would have bought if I'd known about it. (Amazon currently wants $300 bucks for it, but there's a used one that's only $20...) Also, Going, Going... by The Wedding Present seems to have come with a videos-for-each-track DVD, which I also completely missed, but it seems to be readily available and reasonably priced. There's also a deluxe-edition-with-DVD release of Intriguer by Crowded House that might be worth picking up at some point, but that's about it for bands that are in my Top 100.

My copy of Teen Dream came with a DVD. I haven't watched it yet, but I will soon. It seems to be pretty common, though. The version I have you can get for $5 on the site. It has 11 videos, one more song than the album has.
Unless you want to buy my copy for $300....

Tones Of Home: The Best Of Blind Melon by Blind Melon
Tones Of Home is a compilation album by Blind Melon from 2005...released a decade after the band ended with the death of singer Shannon Hoon.
The DVD contains music videos for three songs: "No Rain", "Change", and "Toes Across The Floor". More important are three songs live from the band's performance at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago on September 27th, 1995. The recording is exactly ten years to the date of the release of the Tones Of Home Album. One day after Hoon's 28th birthday. It is also less than a month before Hoon died of a drug overdose on October 21, 1995.
The live performances are "Tones Of Home", "Soup" and "No Rain". _________________ Musicians play gigs.

Power In Numbers by Jurassic 5
This album by Jurassic 5 is pretty good...nothing really outstanding. The DVD is the same. It includes a 23 minute documentary about the band that doesn't really shine at all, and a live performance of the song "Ducky Boy". Not anything you'll really want to watch a second time. It's available on the 2002 reissue versions only, and has a nighttime cover instead of the standard daytime photo. If you see it with a higher price, get the single CD only version instead. _________________ Musicians play gigs.

Live At The Troubadour by Carole King &...mes Taylor
This 2010 live album was the reunion of King and Taylor, in celebration of the Troubadour's 50 years, and of the duo's first shows there together. You can't go qwrong with either, and together, they made this concert a real winner.
Not all, but some of the original 2010 releases came with a DVD of the entire show. This definitely the version to have. Being able to see, and not just hear, this show is a great experience. King's smile alone is a highlight, and being able to see the two of them with their onstage chemistry is top of the line. Seeing their backing band of legends Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel and Danny Kortchmar is great as well. This DVD is definitely the best way to take in this excellent show. _________________ Musicians play gigs.
