No Other by Gene Clark
Some of this sounds very modern. It could easily be a 90s Americana/alt/indie country album with relatively few production and stylistic changes. I think that's due to the combination of sounds/styles and the willingness to write both fully country songs and "hardly country at all" songs. Wonderful record all around. First time listening to Gene Clark, if that wasn't obvious, and while none of the songs have struck me as an immediate favourite, it's all stunningly consistent. Somewhere in the middle of Some Misunderstanding I got a feeling I've stumbled upon a gem of an album and it's one of the best feelings you can get as a music fan. No Other will probably find a place on my 70s chart with another listen or two. Thanks Bay, excellent rec.

Pony by Orville Peck
Great rec, it's an accessible and enjoyable album. As far as I've seen, critics of Orville Peck consider his "gay-cowboy" style and persona a one-dimensional gimmick. While I can definitely see that, if the gimmick works it's fine with me. Honestly the biggest downside of Pony is Peck's unique vocal performance. At times I hated his voice, other times it reminded me of Scott Walker in the best way possible. There are plenty of positive things to say as well. All of his songwriting prowess is on display on the opener Dead of Night, which is the best song on the album. I don't think there's a bad song in general, even the more minimal cuts like Kansas have this vulnerability and catchiness which elevates them. I do wish he'd gone in a more country direction instead of the modernized singer/songwriter tone. On my 2nd listen right now and I'm liking it more and more with each passing song. It's not a game changer, nor a peak country album of the last several years, but it's unique and well written.
Let's go all the way back to the earliest country (or proto-country)

Doc Watson by Doc Watson
I was not expecting to enjoy this so much. Definitely not a cohesive album, and more a showcase of everything Doc Watson can do, from instrumentals to blues to a capella gospel to murder ballads to humorous songs. I didn't get a lot out of the songs meant to be funny, but most of the rest has aged well. Talk About Suffering might actually be the highlight for me, but overall the b side is stronger. Great record on first listen, starting at a low 4/5.
I see you liked her most recent album, so I'm interested to see how you like this one:
