Hello.

Right - got an idea as discussed on Plug last night. Between us we cover a pretty decent chunk of the globe, so I thought it might be an idea to send a record round the world for everyone to spin and review (on this thread), along with a little book to scribble greetings/musings/haiku/abuse in and an envelope to put a tacky souvenir/postcard in. Then when it's got to the last in the chain you can send it back to me and I'll sell the bastard thing on eBay or Discogs. You dig?

Just think - you could stand outside your local landmark/restaurant/brothel with said record in your hand and contribute to this rather strange social experiment. Or just listen to the record and send it on - your choice.

I'll give you all a couple of genre options from my collection that I am thinking of sending (nothing too obvious) at a later date, but this thread is really to gauge interest. You'd have to cover the cost of postage yourself ideally have a record player (as it's a vinyl LP I'd be sending (general consensus is CD might be more practical/economical) and even if you don't give two hoots about the music you could just add some scribbles to the book and tacky souvenir stash if you'd rather. And if you want to give a gift to the next recipient in the same package that's cool too. We'd have to PM our address to the one before us in the chain, so if you're at all worried (or embarrassed) about divulging your details this probably isn't for you. I'd also work out a practical route for the package so it doesn't go UK-US-Australia-UK-Canada-UK-US, for example.

So, opinions and interest please. All comments welcome.

Love the idea in principle. In practice, I'm a bit concerned that one bad link in the chain could ruin the whole deal... maybe I'm being overly pessimistic, though.

Lovely! I'd be in if I could spin vinyl records.

Come to think of it a smaller package with a CD would be less to post, more robust, more inclusive and I could stick a couple in, so maybe that's the way to go...

Yeah now that I'm in college (and I think I'm probably not alone in this?) I don't have any way to play vinyl anymore, and a bunch of us just went to college so IDK. I'd 100% participate if this was CDs though.

Yep, agree with you and Norm. Have changed the OP. Take it you, Norm and Sp4ce (once he gets over his paranoia) are all game?

I'm game Smile Could be a bit of fun.

Totally agree that it should be a CD though. Way easier to send it places, plus it's less likely to get damaged. I'm pretty sure everyone here has access to a CD player, if it was a record it would certainly exclude some people.

I think the idea is neat in practice, but if we can't get Secret Santa or other similar things to work properly this won't really work well either.
