If my vinyl collection were to be lost or destroyed, what would be the first 20 albums I
would replace? (no one artist is repeated). These are not necessarily the greatest, but they mean the most.
In no particular order....
1. Tubeway Army – Replicas
2. Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon
3. Bob Dylan – Desire
4. Bob Seeger – Against the Wind
5. Ian Hunter – You’re Never Alone with a Schizophrenic
6. Stan Getz – Getz Gilberto
7. David Bowie – Hunky Dory
8. Rolling Stones – Sticky Fingers
9. AC/DC – Highway to Hell
10. John Martyn – One World
11. Iron Maiden – Iron Maiden
12. XTC – English Settlement
13. Hawkwind – Hall of the Mountain Grill
14. Adam and the Ants – Kings of the Wild Frontier
15. Joan Armatrading – Me, Myself, I
16. Rickie Lee Jones – Rickie Lee Jones
17. Grace Jones – Nightclubbing
18. Simple Minds – Empires and Dance
19. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – Damn the Torpedoes
20. Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin II

I believe my parents' collection includes all of these, so you got good taste.
If my vinyl collection was lost, I'd probably give up. I've sunk hundreds of dollars into it - literally almost all of the various holiday moneys and cash from odd jobs I've gotten and not put into savings in the past 4 years- and just recently passed the $1000 value mark on discogs (though I'm pretty sure I've yet to spend $1000 on this stuff since I got a lot as 50 cent/$1/$5 per LP grab box kinds of things). If it all was suddenly gone, I'd probably be too bummed to take it back up. I keep most of the ones I really care about in some supposedly watertight and fireproof storage, though it's more for ease of transport (it has a lid and handle and is a carry-on!) than it is cuz I'm paranoid. _________________

That is a very, very hard question. I've got just shy of 800 LPs so to pick 20 would be nigh-on impossible, and luckily I've added their net worth onto my home contents insurance so if the unthinkable happened I'd have a decent compensation package to buy the vast majority of what had been lost again, assuming I could find them...
I've been steadily collecting my Top 100 on vinyl over the last couple of years (Thread here if you want to join in) and they are currently sitting in a secured box (much like the one Benpaco's describing) which would be the first thing I'd grab in the event of a fire after my family. But discounting those I'd have to get the following again pretty sharpish:
1. Cross Paths by The Motifs
2. Love Me Forever by Carlton and the Shoes
3. Transa by Caetano Veloso
4. A Tábua De Esmeralda by Jorge Ben
5. Come Away With ESG by ESG (Soul Jazz repress ideally)
6. Scientist Rids The World Of The Curse Of The Evil Vampires by Scientist
7. Snowball by The Field Mice
8. Grotesque (After The Gramme) by The Fall
9. Person Pitch by Panda Bear
10. Visions Of The Country by Robbie Basho
11. Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart
12. Spirit Of Eden by Talk Talk
13. Clube Da Esquina by Milton Nascimento / Lo Borges
14. In Dub by Ranking Dread
15. LP1 by The Coneheads
16. Low by David Bowie
17. Sung Tongs by Animal Collective
18. Ys by Joanna Newsom
19. Music Has The Right To Children by Boards Of Canada
20. Who Is William Onyeabor? by William Onyeabor
The above list is representative of a combination of cost, how much I've played them, how much I love them, BEA discoveries and the difficulty that some took to track down in the first place.
Oh, and welcome to BEA! _________________ 'Reggae' & t'ing

Its certainly not a situation I wish to contemplate. Luckily mine survived a house fire a while back (little smoke damage on spines). Fortunately they had been moved out of the living room otherwise complete destruction. Anyway, the idea is just the first 20 you would buy. You wouldn't stop at 20!. I have about 3000!
And yes, make sure you are adequately insured! I claimed £1 per LP just for the reduction in values from the smoke damage to spines (it wasn't too bad).
