Untrue by Burial
It opens with the Inland Empire sample. The entire thing sounds magical all the way until the end. Every song has the feels. So many feels!
Honorable mentions: drukQs and Confield, both of which are more technically advanced than Untrue. But I have to give the edge to Untrue for its consistency, immediacy and richer sound. And the feels!

Joanna Newsom's Have One On Me. An extraordinary masterpiece of baring one's soul, of yearning, true giving and compassion. Listening to her closely, recognizing that character in her voice, how achingly strained and precarious it often is in maintaining register, in the gentle, caring, carefully illustrated and sometimes strenuous fluctuation of tone (all in juxtaposition to harp/accompaniment, following this emotional pull with carefully prosed intonation in step), is an immensely moving experience and becomes quite astonishing over the varied development of so much material and through so much narrative journey and overwhelming melodic gift (perhaps the great melodic masterpiece of the century when one also considers how creatively melodic). Perhaps the only "Rock" album to approach or even match old masters like Mozart or Bach in these regards (not that it has much relation otherwise, in a specific musical sense). In modern and cynical times, this sort of truly giving expressivity (and the depth, creativity and honesty from which it is done here) is -- to say the least -- a lost art. _________________ Best Classical
