Why were my "Book Title Game" and "Random Book Quotes" threads locked? I enjoyed them.

Don't want word games proliferating on the forums. Too many is more than zero. They are not enjoyable.

OK. Thanks for answering. But I did enjoy them.

What a poor reply, just bossiness and opinion presented as fact. I'm shocked at the crudity of this

Yes. Saying something isn't enjoyable, when 2 people here were enjoying them, is a bit ridiculous.

they've actually locked all of the word games threads... don't understand this at all. fair enough it's your website and you don't like word games but why stop everyone else from enjoying them? i don't see how anyone can find them that offensive. if users have complained about the site being flooded with word games fair enough but i'd imagine if anything more people are complaining about them being locked. surely you want people posting more on your site? (provided it's not total spam)

Here's the reasoning from the games forum suggestions thread, which you may have missed:
albummaster wrote: | tournaments were why the Games forum was originally created, but has now been drowned by word games which don't really fit the site very well. Low engagement apart from the few that post in them (personally actively avoid them as find them a bit cringe), points harvesting whether true or not, but definitely low quality posts which are not really related to albums in the wider sense and crowding other stuff out that could appear here instead.
If we don't check the number of word games now, they could quite easily proliferate with no rules to govern them (4(?) plus threads already), so I think going forwards we should knock them on the head (disallow them), wait for the fall out and then continue with tournaments organised by whoever wants to do them (wish I had enough time, but got my hands full trying to keep the site going). Yes, hosting is expensive and certainly don't want to be paying to keep stuff going like that. |
So it seems a major element here is the site costs a lot to run, and so albummaster only wants to pay to host the threads that include "high quality" discussion. Not sure what the marginal cost of a thread is, but either way, there's more to it than that. _________________ Join us in the canon game / Add me on RYM

Hmm. I guess if it had been me (which thankfully it was not), I might have kept any word games that were focused on album titles, and then locked the non-album-related ones...?
I'd imagine it's really hard finding a balance between trying to satisfy people who are here because it's supposed to be specifically an album site, and people who just want to discuss (or play word games related to) music and/or media in general. It's probably also hard to determine just how challenging a word-game should be, because if they're too challenging nobody will play them, but if they're not challenging enough, that creates division between those who just enjoy posting album titles (or whatever), and those who suspect that the people posting them are just looking for a way to increase their point-total without having to make charts or do "data moderation." (Except, if you're not going to make any charts, why worry about your point-total? That makes very little sense to me.)
So I don't really know what the solution is, but if anyone can think of a game that can be played within the context of an album forum and has a definable end-point, maybe some simple strategy, and somebody actually "wins" in the end, I know I'd be interested. I certainly can't think of one!

Fair point, I didn't think it would cost more to have more activity on the site. If anything I'd have expected it to be a good thing as more traffic means more keywords which means better rankings on the google algorithm and more clicks to the site which = more users and more potential people buying paid memberships on here. I have a website for my business and we pay a flat fee for our website once a year, it doesn't fluctuate based on the number of pages it has or anything else. But maybe this site does things differently and if that is the case then fair enough - there's a financial reason for it and I cannot argue with that.

But my two threads had been moved to lounge and lounge is supposed to be for off-topic things. They weren't on the games thread anymore.
