- Post subject: Jazz Recommendations From The Past Two Decades
|
Nearly all the jazz album's I've listened to are from 50's and 60's; Now I'm really into the Jazz of that era but I don't know new artists or good albums from 90's or 00's. So please tell me what you know about good albums and new artists from the past two decades; your recommendations are really appreciated (But when I say new albums I really mean new, not new releases from old artists; for instance, don't recommend 50th Anniversary Collectors Edition of Kind of Blue for god's sake). Thank you in advance.

You should probably check out Spring Heel Jack's albums if you haven't already.

so, not sure if you want it to be strictly jazz, but here's some recs. Those in bold are must listens.
straight jazz:
Matthew Shipp-Pastoral Composure
Nicola Conte-Jet Sounds
Polar Bear-Held on the Tips of Fingers
Matana Roberts-Coin Coin Chapter 1
jazz-heavy electronica:
DJ Shadow-Entroducing
Amon Tobin-Bricolage
Flying Lotus-Cosmogramma
Squarepusher-Music Is A Rotted One Note
Cinematic Orchestra-Ma Fleur
Cinematic Orchestra-Every Day
Colin Stetson-New History Warfare Vol II
Jazzanova-In Between
jazz-heavy post rock:
Tortoise-TNT
Talk Talk-Spirit of Eden
Talk Talk-Laughing Stock
EDIT: well, I just checked out your chart and it looks like you've dug into post rock already, so... ignore that I guess. great chart by the way

The few I can think of...
Ornette Coleman, Sound Grammar (2006)
Alice Coltrane, Translinear Light (2004)
Tord Gustavsen Trio, Being There (2007)
Isotope 217, The Unstable Molecule (1997) Chicago postrock all-stars make a jazz album
Masada, Live In Taipei 1995 (1999)
Getatchew Mekurya & The Ex, Moa Anbessa (2006) think ethiojazz meets postrock, all free form
Matana Roberts, Coin Coin Chapter One (2011)
Colin Stetson, New History Warfare vol.2 (2011) brilliant, a must-see on stage
John Zorn, Spy vs. Spy (1989) stretching the date a bit, but this homage to the music of Ornette is really good.
and of course...
Hayden Who!

Only one that I would recommend (as I don't have a heap of jazz albums) is Portico Quartet.
