What's your favourite artist in each decade? (not necessarily best musically but the one you listen to the most.) We all know these can change day to day but at the moment....
1950's: Chuck Berry
1960's: Simon & Garfunkel/Velvet Underground
1970's: Pink Floyd
1980's: Joy Division
1990's: Radiohead
2000's: Arcade Fire
What's yours?

I'll put them by the number of albums I love from them.
1950's: Miles Davis (kind of blue) just one, but is enough.
1960's: The Beatles (revolver, sgt. pepper, white album, abbey road)
1970's: King Crimson (in the wakes of poseidon, Lark tongues in the aspic, Lizard) and Pink Floyd (dark side of the moon, wish you were here, animals)
1980's: Pixies (Come on Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, Doolitle)
1990's: Morphine (Good, Cure for the Pain)
2000's: Radiohead (Kid A, Amnesiac, Hail to the Thief)

1950's: Buddy Holly
1960's: (too many) Beatles, Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, Kinks, The Who, Otis Redding
1970's: The Clash
1980's: R.E.M. or The Smiths
1990's: Guided by Voices or Belle & Sebastian
2000's: The Decemberists
Sorry, too hard to pick just one especially for the 60's, the best decade of music ever! These are personal favorites too right? Not necessarily what critics might say?
Fun thread, thanks.

50's: Miles Davis (Kind of Blue, Birth of the Cool), Ornette Coleman (The Shape of Jazz To Come), Thelonious Monk (Brilliant Corners)
60's: John Coltrane (A Love Supreme, Ascension), Charles Mingus (Black Saint & the Sinner Lady, Epitaph), Captain Beefheart (Trout Mask Replica, Safe As Milk)
70's: Robert Wyatt (Rock Bottom, End of an Ear, Moon In June [track #3 from Third by Soft Machine]), Tim Buckley (Lorca, Starsailor), Klaus Schulze (Irrlicht, Cyborg)
80's: Meredith Monk (Dolmen Music, Songs From A Hill)
90's: Royal Trux (Twin Infinitives), Nick Cave (The Good Son), Lisa Germano (Geek the Girl)
00's: Arcade Fire (Funeral, Neon Bible), though it should be noted that Arcade Fire isn't even close to any of the artists above, and they are chosen more by default because of a weak decade so far.

Some good picks from everyone. Yes, very hard to pick a band from the current decade and you might not name the same bands in a 'best ever' selection. These are just bands that you enjoy listening to purely because the music fits you.

50s: Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman
60s: Bob Dylan, Tim Buckley, Velvet Underground
70s: Shawn Phillips, Nick Drake, Led Zep
80s: Joy Division, The Smiths, Kate Bush
90s: Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Oasis
00s: Sufjan Stevens, Joanna Newsom, The Strokes
If I could only choose one act, then it would be the acts in the bold. I agree 00s are poor

60s: The Doors (though I also love The Beatles and The Who)
70s: Television
80s: The Smiths
90s: Blur
00s: The Libertines
Echo & the Bunnymen and The Fall both deserve mention for the 70s/80s
