I just got a record player as a delayed Christmas present. I don't have many LP's, a few dozen 45's, and I haven't had a record player for 20 years.

So, what albums do you recommend I get for my collection? I'm looking for things that sound way better on vinyl than they do in digital form.

The best sounding record in my collection is probably the new repress of Boards of Canada's In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country, although I take it from your tastes that you probably wouldn't like them.

I'm Armed With Quarts Of Blood by Caroliner

Its essential that you listen to this album, on vinyl. the various Locked grooves and forced skips make it a crazy experience that demands your full attention.

This thread seems odd though, is there really that much of a disparity in sound quality between some CDs and vinyls of the same issue taht it makes one a must listen over the other?

When I would recommend someone a album specifically in vinyl it would have to be for some experimental reason like that caroliner album or fuck the retarded girls' "unplayable" 7' (purposely, scratched painted, and bent)

There's a rawness to it. Lo-fi sounds better on vinyl hands down. Folk, too, I think. I have a personal preference towards Post Punk and early electronic on vinyl, too, a little squealier and still ... I don't know, more raw. I like it.

Best vinyls vs just normal recordings (at least of what I've heard):

Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division

High Violet by The National

Bookends by Simon And Garfunkel

Pretty much anything sounds better in vinyl as the original analog signal is preserved.

I suggest that you start with your top 10 selections in your chart. Smile

Well, now that's just not true. What some record companies do is source the vinyl from the digital master, which in has the opposite effect, and makes a cold and bland sounding record, which sounds worse than the CD. Kanye's albums are an example of this.

Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt

Just got this one. The record is orange, like it came out of a cereal box. Sounds really good, though. Anyway, thanks for the recs. I'll look for those albums.
