Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 7% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.6/100, a mean average of 74.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.7.

My favourite solo Wilson album. Much more poppy than anything else he's ever produced, but it works. Never thought I would hear a Wilson song like Permanating. Highlights are Nowhere Now, The Same Asylum As Before and People Who Eat Darkness.
Coming back to this site... i'd say this album is better than the last time i visited this page. A lot better. Btw, godpepper, i hope you're trolling . Your comment is hilarious
Too much hate on this album from the hardcore prog metal fans. I still think this is a dynamic and heavy record, just with some lighter tracks, which steven has always had on his records. I think the only duds are Nowhere Now and Detonation. Steven has always been a fan of the pop stuff and it was a matter of time for him to make an album like this. Personally I think it's better than insurgentes, and almost as good as grace for drowning, which goes on way too damn long.
A good record
Good, but underwhelming, considering the genius music has created in the past. Best songs here: title track and Pariah

This really was the best album of the year as far as I was concerned. It's just another brilliant outing from a brilliant musician.
When Steven Wilson pops his clogs (and I hope that isn't for a long time yet),he will be revered with the same degree of awe as Hendrix, Prince, Bowie, Froese, to name but a few. This album is superb! I like the slight shift to a more Bowie type approach. Pariah could become one of my all time favourite tracks from any artist, when it breaks it gives me goose bumps.
This appears to be Steven Wilson's most "accessible" album and one that has divided many fans. I enjoy this album. I felt there was a little repetition with the previous two releases, so it was with relief that I listened to this album. Although not every track does it for me, it is an album I am likely to play in the coming years.
It's not as emotional as Grace For Drowning or Hand. Cannot. Erase., but it's definitely the best album SW has done in the pop rock style in his career
