Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 16% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.2/100, a mean average of 73.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.2.

This is The Mars Volta sound. Much more coherent and accessible than their previous record and the one that follows. Frances the Mute is one very long song and is often hard to swallow. This album alleviates this problem with (albeit large) bite-sized songs that are more digestible for those who don't have the attention span or time to pay Frances the full attention it requires. Bedlam in Goliath on the other hand is a crazy and energetic album that probably requires some previous understanding of The Mars Volta's style before it can be properly respected and appreciated. Amputechture seems to be nestled softly in between these two Mars Volta extremes, balancing their fundamentally alienating style with ease of listening (if that exists for TMV).

Standout tracks: Meccamputechture, Viscera Eyes.

I don´t know about you, but even for a band like The Mars Volta, this is something insane. I love it. Day of the Bathomets and Tetragrammaton bring out the bands real talent and are some of the most fun for a immensily long time. Second best album by this band.

Now this is it! The point where the mars volta truly forges ahead into new territory. What an amazing record. Vermicide, Meccamputecture, Viscera Eyes, Day of the Baphomets. Instant classics! Even if you think the rest is filler. The tracks named are so great in their own right. This band truly comes into it's own on this album. Pushing the limits rythmically. Creating some of the most abstract guitar parts in memory. It is one of my all time favorites.
