Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.0/100, a mean average of 71.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 71.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.7.

Always a worry when a band makes a comeback album like this, with such a stellar discography already in the bag, that they might not hit the heights of their previous work and sully their legacy. While this is definitely their weakest album since the 90s in my book, it was still enjoyable and worth the wait. Herd Culling is the highlight. One of the bonus tracks, Love in the Past Tense, is very good also (no idea why they didn't include this in the actual LP???). If this is indeed "closure" it's a decent way to do it. But I'm hoping it's "continuation" !
I had already made the decision not to buy this, don't really know why as I hadn't heard it. The decision was taken away from me when it was bought for me for a Christmas present. It sounds much more like a SW solo effort and the two misssing members are noticed. It is good but not in the league of previous work in my opinion. Perhaps I need to give it a few more listens...
I thought the playing and production on this latest from Porcupine Tree was absolutely top notch. The songs hit for the most part too and, despite being a little overlong, overall I found the album to be a refreshing new package from a veteran band.
This is actually a very good comeback album, which comes as a surprise as while I'm a fan of both the OG band and Steven Wilson's solo material, I have not liked the guys recent solo releases at all. Singles Harridan and Of The New Day open the album up strongly, and later songs like Walk the Plank and Never Have (the most Wilsonian of the batch) provide important variation to what is a slog of a project. Despite this, it's ultimately a bit too long to justify songs like Dignity and Chimera's Wreck, but die-hards will still be happy with these. It does sound overall more like a Wilson album than Porcupine Tree proper, but it's a solid return for the iconic group.
