Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. My favourites:
Frankenstein, to be alive, this hell
“Hold the girl” is very uneven. The first six tracks of the album are not very good. Sawayama’s vocals are overproduced, making key moments sound cheap. This is most apparent in the choruses, which just feel like plastic being thrown at you. Starting at “Your Age”, the record begins to find its strengths. The instrumentals become more electronic and pair better with the song structure. The lyrical focus on isolation and bigotry becomes more intimate. “Send My Love to John” is touching from the perspective of a mother learning to accept her son and apologizing for her mistakes. Hopefully, this refinement will continue on future albums.

Although not quite possessing the bite of ‘SAWAYAMA’, ‘Hold The Girl’ still proves itself to be a solid album of well written pop tunes, interesting genre shifts and expressive lyricism.
