Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.7/100, a mean average of 69.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 70.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 18.4.

I loved this band when I was younger. For some reason I gave up on them after Octahedron. At the time it wasn't my cup of tea (the only song I liked was Cotopaxi since it was the hardest rocker). Now that I'm older and my tastes have changed/broadened, I feel I can enjoy the final two MV albums.

Finally got around to listening to Noctourniquet and wow am I blown away with how dense, subtle and beautiful the songs on it are. Cedric really does come up with some lovely melodies and Omar and co. craft sounds you wouldn't hear anywhere else. Belatedly enjoying their final work together as a band is like catching up with an old friend... You just pick up where you left off.

For some reason, this is one of the best Mars Volta albums in my opinion. Noctourniquet is the best song from this album. Other standout tracks are Aegis, Malkin Jewel, Empty Vessels, Zed and Two Naughts. If people would stop comparing every album Mars Volta have released to Deloused or Frances the Mute, then they would appreciate their newer albums more.

This album just shows how nearly flawless The Mars Volta is. I also believe that this album is perhaps their most accessible album, in that those who are not necessarily keen on the idea of The Mars Volta’s sound could still enjoy this album. The Mars Volta is known for 10-20 minute songs of mostly instrumental sometimes, though not all the time (much like many of their progressive rock predecessors) however this album does not feature that. The longest song clocks in at 7:27. It’s a great album and I highly recommend it.
