Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 78.5/100, a mean average of 77.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.7.

A babyrecord of their career. Immature and searching. Later they removed the wanna-be-Joy Division kind of band. They also used less words! scaling down and found the balance. And later they totally went full on orchestrating, drama and pretentions. They went to much for many people, but for me they went their own way, slow and thoughtfully.

If you care for Tindersticks it's a lot to find in their later albums. Their absolute peak was Curtains. A top-10 album for me.

Although a little too long, the album is rather pleasing to listen to because of variation between tracks. The middle part is relatively weak but it starts strong and ends with a good conclusion. Several tracks are one of a kind and are either well sung or well instrumented, though sometimes singing can be really off. But definitely this is chamber pop with artistry.

A great discovery! Their similarity to "The National" has already been stated. I like "The National"...

I discovered this album at the same time as Cure for Pain from Morphine and Worst Case Scenario from dEUS. These records became my soundtrack of that summer.
Stuart Staples has an amazing voice, and on their debut they manage to create a perfect melancholic record. The album lasts 77 minutes, as the band thought that they may never make a second album, so they put all songs they had on it. Still this album never bores, not even after listen hundreds of times.

OK. So this album is actually far better than my previous comment would suggest.

The album makes an enjoyable listen. Slightly overlong though, like too much of a delicious, but very sweet dessert. My favorites are actually "Whiskey and Water" and "Paco de Renaldo's Dream". And yes, there's a beautiful baritone voice, hence reminding cartoken of The National.

Interesting. I remember hearing this album years ago, and didn't make much of an impression then. Maybe it would now.
