Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 65.2/100, a mean average of 62.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 63.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.7.

Titled "A Single Man" in reference to it being his first album/songwriting effort without Bernie Taupin, this record is the first of the post-classic-era Elton John albums, and as such I hadn't heard many good things about it going in. But I'm pleasantly surprised; it's a pretty solid album that, no, isn't as strong in the lyrical department as his prior works with Taupin, but has a lot of classic Elton instrumental and vocal moments. It's definitely on the uneven side, and at 49 minutes long, it could have been helped by trimming some of the fat, but the highlights here are worth checking out—I liked both It Ain't Gonna Be Easy and Madness quite a bit, and Song for Guy is rightly regarded as an understated classic. Perhaps it doesn't reach the highs of his previous golden period, but there are some great moments here on what should be a record regarded higher than it is.
Embarrassingly bad, coming off the string of the '70-'77 albums.
Nothing outstanding but enjoyable enough. Not his best but not his worst either. Just about okay.
