Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 18% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.1/100, a mean average of 73.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.9.

Sorry, I can't take Springsteen seriously when he's singing childish songs like Froggy Went a Courtin' and Old Dan Tucker. The best part of the album is the energy of the backing ensemble. I appreciate Springsteen's attempt at a solid folk album of traditional songs, but Nanci Griffith did it better with her Other Voices tribute albums to fellow folk singer-songwriters. Springsteen's charm is his original songs, and without them he just does not delight. Not recommended.

We shall overcome, is Bruce springsteen's tribute to the great folk legend Pete seeger, although only a few of the tracks have anything to do with him directly. Really, it's Bruce's tribute to folk music, the kind of which has always had a huge influence on his own songwriting. It's a fantastically enjoyable album, Springsteen is having a great time here. There's some wonderful tracks here, from the cowboy anthem, Jesse James, to the irishness of, Mrs. McGrath, and to the singalong of, Jacob's ladder. The title track, we shall overcome, Is exceptionally moving, and, Shenandoah, atmospheric. Other highlights are, eerie canal, and, eye on the prize. The extended version includes springsteen's pogues like, American land, and the brilliant, how can a poor man stand such times and live. It's a fun album, and a nice diversion from his own stuff.

This project really made Springsteen glow again. The tour was 10 times better than the album though but it says more about the tour than of the album, because its a great one even if he wrote none of the songs himself.

I think this album anticipates a lot of the ostentatiously produced folk music that would become super popular in the last chunk of the decade, which is pretty interesting considering just who it is we're talking about here. Now that I think of it, has indie rock/folk's roots ever been severed very thoroughly from the root of The Boss?

Bruce proves again what an important artist he is. These songs are ones that could easily be forgotten, as they are all from previous generations. Done with taste and excellence by Bruce, as usual.
