Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.4/100, a mean average of 72.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.1.

Definitely his weakest solo project IMO, unfourtunately a lot of the songs just don't seem to go anywhere and it becomes pretty repetitive
I like Guess Again and Brain In A Bottle, but I find the rest of the album a bit samey and unspectacular.
Solid piece of work from Radiohead's frontman, a piece that you can easily get lost in that undeservedly gets lost when mentioning Yorke's solo work.
Good album, really. Cohesive and atmospheric. Not as good as ANIMA and The Eraser, but I like how all tracks seem tied together, like a whole thing.
Fave: Guess Again!
A fine little album to relax to. Thom Yorke can make anything sound good. Like The Eraser, the best tracks on here are the ones where he harmonizes more.
A very underrated album. Subtle, quiet, haunting. Especially the first and last tracks.
Thom's electronic/experimental side is generally very creatively satisfying and a pleasure to immerse yourself in. Throw some good headphones on and I could listen to Amok, The Eraser, and The King of Limbs all day, listening to the intricacies, layers, percussion, disembodied melodies etc. So it is only fair that I objectively criticise an album that hasn't reached those lofty standards. Modern Boxes lacks the vision of Eraser, the cohesive layerings of Amok, and the variety of TKoLs. There are four very good tracks that hold the album together but as a whole it has a lacklustre mood that permeates each song. It's a 70/100 only because Brain in a Bottle, Guess Again, Mother Lode and Nose Grows Some are all rewarding on multiple listens. The atmospheric tracks are a bit dull for mine.
It grew me on me. I wouldn't say it as good as The Eraser but it is differently different and enjoyable. Good album to listen to when you are up at 4 AM.
I originally only thought this album was only alright. However, after hearing about his recent break up with his partner of almost two decades, I've changed my entire perception of this album. The minimalist, melancholic beats, along with the short, personal lyrics, really make this album shine. This is Thom Yorke's "Pink Moon"; no, it sounds nothing like Nick Drake's acoustic folk, but both albums are so stripped down and touchingly sad compared to their other works. Listening to TMB feels like you're there, witnessing Thom Yorke's relationship deteriorate, just like how listening to "Pink Moon" makes you imagine depressed Nick Drake playing guitar isolated in his bedroom. I might actually like this more than "The Eraser" now, despite the fact that it isn't as easy of a listen.
Just an Ok album for me.
