Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 47.1/100, a mean average of 43.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 43.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 31.4.

Explosão de criatividade um pouco mal aproveitada. Mas tem tesouros no meio!
I'm liking this more than I thought I would. She gets such a bad rap cuz she's a bit extreme and was Hannah Montana but honestly this is really quite delightful. To be fair Wayne Coyne helped.
The opener gave a lot away of what this was going to be: a mess. It's the annoying throwing random-ass genres together in the hope someone will mistake it for being complex, as I'm used to from prog rock. It wasn't until 'The Floyd Song' that I realized the unsettling cover isn't a coincidence; The Flaming Lips must have something to do with this directly. The band who single-handedly showed how great psychedelic music is made and how it is NOT made. And as I'm used to from the late Flaming Lips, a lot of tracks are filled with gimmicks that are only going to fool the kids who got introduced to music by Miley's previous album, but it might have put them off as well.
I realize now for the first time the Aphex Twin-influence of The Flaming Lips on songs like 'Milky Milky Milk' (horrible song though), and it makes sense knowing the last decade they've been close to mocking everyone and everything (including The Beatles), but the joke doesn't land as much as it does with Richard James.
The songs where they don't try to sound as "interesting" as possible, are extremely dull. With some exceptions of songs that are really just simplistic and quite nice (like 'Bang Me Box'), but on an album with 23 tracks that doesn't do much. Standout tracks are non-existent.
Raw and eclectic. It's an indulgent mess, but an entirely honest indulgent mess... the closest we'll ever get to Miley Cyrus, perhaps even the closest we'll ever get to a famous celebrity. I can't recall another A-lister ever laying absolutely everything on the table like this.

Maybe it's just that I'm a Flaming Lips superfan, but I quite enjoy this album. I can now see this is what the Lips were trying to do on Oczy Mlody, but weren't successful in doing. These are clearly very Lips-ian songs, and some are literally Flaming Lips songs; The Floyd Song is reworked on the Lips album Oczy Mlody as Sunrise (Eyes of the Young), and Cyrus Skies is actually just the previously released Lips song Can't Let It Go (one of their best and most underappreciated songs, off one of their best and most underappreciated albums, 7 Skies H3). Miley brings a really interesting pop sensibility, along with hints of RnB and even Hip-Hop, that allow the album to maintain diversity and yet cohesiveness throughout its runtime.
85/100 (Very Good)
i enjoyed this record. the flaming lips are great here. miley does fine on vocals. i enjoyed it much more than i figured i would. i have to disagree with the masses on this one i enjoyed it.
What's shocking is this 92 minute album just about manages to justify its running time due to the high quality of the majority of tracks. Although the second half doesn't stand up to the first half, this is still a fascinating experimental psychedelic-rock album from Miley Cyrus (of all people) who completely eschews pop conventions to produce a special piece of work with great production.
Terribly self-indulgent but in the best way possible; this is truly her "i've grown up" album unlike the generic "Can't Be Tamed" & "Bangerz". Likely to go down as the best and most polarising work of her career.
If you take away the lyrics and the shitty/lazy parts, it's an album of pretty good Flaming Lips instrumentals.
Tangerine -> Tiger Dreams -> Evil Is But A Shadow is my favourite part of the album
it's not that great, obviously, but it's good, creative and honest with no major label support behind it
