Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)
This artist is rated in the top 1% of all artists on BestEverAlbums.com. This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 83.7/100, a mean average of 82.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 84.1/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 17.2.

Probably my favorite band of all time! Of course what they did in the 70s with Peter Gabriel was special but they continued on to have a very strong, successful career with Phil Collins on the vocals. The albums waned in quality slightly as the years went on but there was still always stuff worth hearing on each release. But that classic lineup with Gabriel, Hackett, Collins, Banks, Rutherford can't be beat!
If you count band, solo, and all their b-sides and rarities, then this is easily one of the greatest bands of the era, or ever.
My favourite band of all time. I've been a huge fan since 1977 on having heard ...And Then There Were Three, my first piece of music from the band. They are outstanding as a live act.
"The shift in this band's sound from "progressive" to pop was actually not nearly as dramatic as it's been made out to be, particularly if one listens to their albums in chronological order. There was always an adult pop band lurking within Genesis during their prog years. What made songs like "Watcher of the Skies" and "Firth of Fifth" work so wonderfully wasn't their complex rhythmic shifts (although it's easy to overlook just what a fine drummer Phil Collins was and is). It was the keyboard hooks that the vastly underrated Tony Banks laid on top of the rock-solid melodies, with Steve Hackett's guitar solos possessing a hymn-like quality quite unlike anyone else. The band was also blessed to have had two of rock's more memorable front men: the theatrical, vocally dark-shaded Peter Gabriel, and the soulful, Everyman-ish Collins. Fans of only one era or the other are doing themselves, and the band members, a disservice by not recognizing the depth and variety of the music contained in both eras."
My best progressive rock band
1. Trespass (best... the knife)
2. Foxtrot (suppers ready)
3. Selling England by the pound (dancing...)
4. ...on brodway (in the cage)
5. Nursery crime (the musical box)
Genesis are in the top 5 bands ever in the Peter Gabriel era...
1. PINK Floyd
2. The beatles
3. Genesis (peter Gabriel era 69/74)
4. Led Zeppelin
5.the Rolling Stones
My favorite band of all time. They really captured my imagination when I was younger, with all those romantic and beautiful musical journeys through lands of dark fairy tales and Greek mythology. As a three piece they changed their approach a bit, but they still rocked and were extremely creative!
The greatest band of all time. I like their earlier work the most, but they kept reinventing themselves and putting out new and exciting stuff all throughout their career. I can't overstate how much I have enjoyed listening to their music.
The Peter Gabriel era Genesis is probably the best progressive rock band. It's sad that they later became the horrible pop band that the general public knows them as.
