Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)
This artist is rated in the top 2% of all artists on BestEverAlbums.com. This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 82.2/100, a mean average of 82.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 83.1/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 11.9.

The King of Soul
To add to Le_Samurai, he didn't just have energy, he had soul. Others may have had more range or precision, but Otis Redding poured himself into every song. The opening 10 seconds of These Arms of Mine should provide enough proof. Anyone who wants to learn what genuine heartache and passion sounds like should listen to Otis Redding.
It's sad to think what he could have done. Easily one of the greatest singers of all time, even though he didn't have the "beautiful" voice like Marvin Gaye or Sam Cooke. He relied on energy, which is what made him so great.
