Top 40 Greatest Music Albums by thevmusic666 Unknown

These are my top 40 albums at this moment in time. My criteria are simple. These are the albums that have had a major influence on me, and they're the albums I find myself wanting to listen to most often. Yes, the list is skewed toward more recent releases. I make no apologies for that, as I think a lot of so-called "classic" albums are at least a little overrated, not to mention many of them were probably better in the context of their times.

For those who may be wondering: I'm not a huge Beatles fan and I do not enjoy listening to jazz. I liked Magical Mystery Tour, and I have been known to put on Miles Davis' Bitches' Brew now and then, but that's about as far as it goes.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 79.4/100, a mean average of 75.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.3/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 13.7.

Can't say I agree with all your choices, but I respect your taste. Nice inclusion of the Tea Party...

Yeah, I agree with your Mechanical Animals pick. Not the best artist of all time .. But hes a good artist that made a great album. Your Sigur Ros picks are awesome, interesting variety though, wont knock it

yeah man, no worries.. i can see why the forrest gump score might not appeal to you.. as for the inclusion of greatest hits collections, i agree that they're not really albums as such, it's just i found myself asking whether i'd rather take 'goodbye yellow brick road' or 'elton john greatest hits' on a long trip.. i'd have to pick the latter given the former losing considerable momentum during the second half.. and yeah, elton john is indeed a rare breed in the sense that he's managed to sustain quality control throughout a 30/40 year career.. if only he had his vocal cords looked at maybe he could start singing again and stop growling! (saw him in concert a little while back)

That's a shame, because Mechanical Animals is a truly great album. He may not be the genius many of his fans think he is, but Marilyn had at least one great album in him.

Anybody that likes Jeff Buckley deserves a high rating, but Merilyn Manson just made me rate it less...

It's not important, telefunker. I always say that you can't argue taste; people either like what they like or they "like" what they think they're supposed to like. Also, I'd add that my chart is subject to updating at any time, as it was originally compiled somewhere around 4 in the morning, so my brain function wasn't necessarily at its peak as far as memory goes. I already had to edit it today as I had neglected Ziggy Stardust. My tastes are much wider ranging than this chart would imply. I'll have to check out your chart to see if we have more in common than those three (super duper excellent) bands.
