There's a lot of bands that sounds a whole lot better in a live setting that in the studio. The Allman Brothers Band is the best example of this. In the studio recordings, they sound cool, but here they're a force of nature. From the very first note of the slide guitar, you know that you've just been punched so hard in the stomach that you'll hardly recover any time soon. Duane Allman is for sure my all time favourite guitarist. [First added to this chart: 08/18/2015]

You enter the saloon slowly, the air so still that you could cut it with a knife. Between the dust and the hats you can see dozens of eyes staring at you, a bottle of whiskey kept in the air by frozen hands. After a second, everything starts flowing again, the tension still pervading the room. But in a dark corner, five young men are playing the music of sin, of bravery, of hope, of death. That is, the music of humanity. The saxophonist is crying for a spanish woman that has stolen his heart without looking back at him, the violinist narrates some obscure deed they've done and that they now regret, while the guitarist, the bassist and the drummer are keeping up the dark beguiling sentiment of the music.
Nobody knows them, but they're changing the minds of all of the ones who listen carefully. When they finish, you shoot them cold dead, 'cause no one else should know the secret that they've taught you.

An acoustic bass that it's not a double-bass? Wow. Take away the distortion from Nirvana and the screams, and you'll discover that Cobain was hiding behind those sounds. This album is so brutally honest that it nearly annihilates you. [First added to this chart: 08/18/2015]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 5% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 88.9/100, a mean average of 90.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 90.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.1.

The picks that aren’t completely obscure are VERY basic.
However, I convinced myself to check out Nusrat - it’s not everyday I encounter an album from Pakistan. They certainly are good vibes. And wow! Massive Attack remixed one of his songs before they made Blue Lines.
