This is a sort of opera "greatest hits" performance, which collectively is better than any single opera. Carreras, Domingo, and Pavarotti are all legends, although Pavarotti is my favorite. He was lucky to be born with such a beautiful voice. They don't make them like any of these guys anymore! This music is where bubblegum pop comes from! [First added to this chart: 04/08/2018]

This is far and away the greatest opera, especially because of its length. Wagner used atonality to stretch this opera out to a whopping 14-15 hours, and in correlation, communicated more story (which he wrote himself) than any other previous opera. Roger Waters is the only artist I can think of to have such talent in both music and writing. A little bit weird, but if you are gifted in music like my 2 year old nephew you will get it right away! :) [First added to this chart: 03/04/2018]

This is the only recording I have that I am unsure of performance quality, but it is the only Barber of Seville on BEA. Also the orchestra is named after the great Rossini himself so how can they be bad at Barber of Seville? Most of Rossini's operas where megahits among the public (Semiramide was a notable exception), he would be an even bigger billboard artist than Drake if you can believe it! I have heard and own a bunch of Rossini operas, but they would clog up the top of this list and this is far and away his best, written at the age of 24!
In fact I've been so obsessed with this opera I went through the score and recorded every key and noted every absurdity in the score to improve my own composition. I think it was beneficial!

Wow! does this guy not get enough attention! He was the greatest composer of melody, and his ideas inspired very notably Chopin and Wagner, and those are just my faves! He pioneered long, sensitive melodies that people probably just don't understand, but they should! Was more inconsistent than Rossini however, and died at an early age :( [First added to this chart: 04/09/2018]

This is probably the most exciting Verdi work. The Dies Irae is definitely the highlight, but there is a lot more epic and scary music to be found here. Some of it seems out of place in a Requiem though... [First added to this chart: 04/07/2018]

I just decided John Coltrane was more talented than Beethoven. Usually composers like that's close to final works before a grisly death is the greatest, so I checked the next album after A Love Supreme and its way better. A barbaric orgy that poses a direct antithesis to the ordered classics I love. Wonderful! [First added to this chart: 06/29/2018]

Another scary Requiem, but not as epic. I'm sure Mozart wrote most of it, all his students could do was copy and paste... Another composer that died too early... [First added to this chart: 04/07/2018]

All of my favorite composers die early! JK. But this is great piano music! Chopin shared my disdain for grandiose symphonies with no purpose and stuck to writing beautiful piano music. It was what he wanted. [First added to this chart: 04/09/2018]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.2/100, a mean average of 86.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 86.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.8.

I respect this chart quite a great deal. What you're trying to do here so uniquely is worth the time analyzing. The problem is, though, that there's still a lot of super important popular music that I suspect you might not have heard and that is extremely instructive for understanding the strenghts and innovations of popular music. Heading straight to the charts (specially the modern charts) is a terrible idea. Again, it's not that the music is "bad", it's just that it gives a misleading picture. Take into account: most of the most acclaimed artists in history of popular music (particularly those from the 64-74 period) are REALLY that great, and they help give a clear picture of what the strenghts of the artform are.

Also, Dream Theater sucks ass. Good chart anyway.

I don't think you have to balance your list.. music is changing... Something randomly picked on the billboard charts now is probably the antithesis to what was going on in the 60s. I guess you just like that... no problem...

In response to your recent comment on my chart, I don't know that I necessarily feel that way (decades getting progressively worse), but it's pretty close to that. It really just depends on my mood, but I've generally always loved the 60s most, followed by the 70s, initially due to the likes of all the big mainstream acts but this site has helped me expand tremendously specifically into the jazz and guitar rock of that era. It keeps getting closer though to be honest (on my first profile here, probably about 6 years ago, my initial chart was probably 90% just 60s & 70s). As I dig deeper into modern hip hop, post rock and electronic I keep growing to love the recent years but the fact that I'm still finding new jazz, post punk, krautrock, psychedelic, etc. makes it difficult for them to really catch up. I'm trying to balance my list now; not sure if you saw it before or after my recent update.

Yeah, when I was a kid I was a super "hipster" and listened to this stuff instead of the billboard type stuff everyone else listened to and I listen to now. Still haven't grown out of it evidently :)

In response to your comment on my chart: I would say some people convince themselves to like something that’s crap, because they don’t know there is better music or because they focus too much on stuff that has nothing to do with music.

But anyway, I don’t know what you think of my chart.
