We are now getting to music that does not totally knock your socks off on first listen. It's still good though... I find this to be a very funny opera that happens to be more rocking than real operas, which is probably why more people like it. David Gilmour has some knockout solos on this album, especially on Comfortably Numb, the best song on the album. The human voice just can't match what David is doing here! The next album to buy if you liked David Gilmour's knockout solos on The Wall. I think the end of this album has David Gilmour's best solo ever. The human voice just can't match what David is doing here! [First added to this chart: 02/19/2018]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.2/100, a mean average of 86.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 86.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.8.

I respect this chart quite a great deal. What you're trying to do here so uniquely is worth the time analyzing. The problem is, though, that there's still a lot of super important popular music that I suspect you might not have heard and that is extremely instructive for understanding the strenghts and innovations of popular music. Heading straight to the charts (specially the modern charts) is a terrible idea. Again, it's not that the music is "bad", it's just that it gives a misleading picture. Take into account: most of the most acclaimed artists in history of popular music (particularly those from the 64-74 period) are REALLY that great, and they help give a clear picture of what the strenghts of the artform are.

Also, Dream Theater sucks ass. Good chart anyway.

I don't think you have to balance your list.. music is changing... Something randomly picked on the billboard charts now is probably the antithesis to what was going on in the 60s. I guess you just like that... no problem...

In response to your recent comment on my chart, I don't know that I necessarily feel that way (decades getting progressively worse), but it's pretty close to that. It really just depends on my mood, but I've generally always loved the 60s most, followed by the 70s, initially due to the likes of all the big mainstream acts but this site has helped me expand tremendously specifically into the jazz and guitar rock of that era. It keeps getting closer though to be honest (on my first profile here, probably about 6 years ago, my initial chart was probably 90% just 60s & 70s). As I dig deeper into modern hip hop, post rock and electronic I keep growing to love the recent years but the fact that I'm still finding new jazz, post punk, krautrock, psychedelic, etc. makes it difficult for them to really catch up. I'm trying to balance my list now; not sure if you saw it before or after my recent update.

Yeah, when I was a kid I was a super "hipster" and listened to this stuff instead of the billboard type stuff everyone else listened to and I listen to now. Still haven't grown out of it evidently :)

In response to your comment on my chart: I would say some people convince themselves to like something that’s crap, because they don’t know there is better music or because they focus too much on stuff that has nothing to do with music.

But anyway, I don’t know what you think of my chart.
