Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

This is a great chart! A bit lighter on for the earlier decades, but reaffirms how much great music there's been in more recent ones - especially 90s. Good mix of genres, plenty of artists I haven't heard of and others I've been meaning to get into. So this is a very handy guide. Nice to see some Tool, Faith No More and Soundgarden and Tame Impala in here.
I appreciate & respect your choices ~ but I couldn't get 'into it'. With so many USA artist & a majority of albums that rated highly (ie top 20) in their year, it is a 'safe' chart that will appeal to the many. Personally, I prefer charts that show more 'risk' and a unique 'personality' that will inspire me to delve deeper & wider into the albums/artists that I have missed along the way.

I can respect your pick for number 1, but number 9 is almost unforgiveable. But to each his own, right?

Awesome chart!
Listened Leaves Turn Inside You recently. I loved this album so much. It's on my top 100 now.
To be honest some of the choices aren't for me, (I tend to enjoy the stuff which one could easily be compelled to sing along to) but there's some really cool experimental stuff on here which I like nonetheless.
