Top 100 Music Albums of 2023 by
DommeDamian
2023 is now over and the listening journey was vastly vastly different than both 2021 and 2022. During all of 2023, I avoided listening to newly released material (mostly), both because I had my "Scaruffi 8/10-Adjacent"-project and to see if my mindset would alter if I didn't immediately hear something a few days or weeks old. I waited until the year was over, and then I went on RateYourMusic and selected the top albums for each of my favorite genres (principally Indie Folk/Singer-Songwriter, Dream Pop, Punk Rock etc). Therefore, this year has a much higher rating on average, because I didn't have to go through albums within genres I have experienced to not be a fan of (even though not all 2023 records I heard was golden by any means). But if you look at the number of albums I have heard - right now, precisely 300 albums - it's still relatively low compared to 2022's 1050 records and even 2021's 544. Although, I have managed to beat 2020's 175 which is good.
Anyway here's my favorites, the first completion in late february 2024.

Nightmarish Paths feels like video game music extended. Even though BI's fundamentals of composition are not on par with video game composing giants, what he does is stretch the vibe and the tunes out to lengths that grant the listener a better understanding of the sound-scenario, unlike most composers. Victims, also being the greatest track here, could easily have been two or three minutes long, but it feels right to have it be six minutes. Or Depths of Hell, basically BI getting the 'we-are-in-trouble-we-need-to-run' part of story mode core, down to a T. Unstabled is an unstable composition as it feels incomplete, both the first faux-noir act, and the other piano piece before lazily trying to tie it together at the end.
Despite being called Nightmarish Paths, I don't think these tracks are "scary", but I do believe that Borderline Issues is a psychologically thinking musician. He taps at different corners of the mind, and after this record, he would go to make crazy, harsh noise. The closest song that gets to be unsettling is It's Time To Sleep, but also because it is the most psychological and hypnotic one. You've heard everything after two minutes, but the way it keeps going for 15 minutes feels oddly satisfying (the listener also won't really notice the stacks as it progresses). If my brain were attached to wires like in the mv for Eminem's Rap God, this track is if somebody tapped those wires. I don't know what the ringing is coming from, but its avant-garde gestures are worthy of the Supreme Dicks. [First added to this chart: 02/26/2024]
