100 Best Music of the Eighties by Junomoogmello

I didn't title this chart 'Best Albums of the Eighties' because it includes a few compilations which were released much later. Apart from that most of the albums were released in the eighties and I have only included albums which I own on vinyl, some being the original albums released at the time, others re-issues. There is a very strong synth theme which is not surprising given my love of electronic music and synthesisers. I have been lucky enough to see a lot of the bands listed in concert, How We Live, Human League, Howard Jones, Nik Kershaw, China Crisis, Johnny Hates Jazz, Chris De Burgh, Clannad, Terrence Trent D' Arby', Simple Minds, Robert Plant, Spandau Ballet, The Waterboys, ABC and Midge Ure, the latter playing most of the Ultravox and Visage catalogue with an amazing modern band. For me, music tends to sit within seasons, so my Eighties music doesn't get listened to in winter months, I save those months for Prog, Psychedelia and Heavy Rock/Metal. There are however a few of the heavier albums in here, Van Halaen 5150, for example, which I always feel has such a 'summery' upbeat feel to it. Many will resonate with my album selection, many of my notes may centre around the kind of synths and electric drums being used at that time, which I apologise for. As a musician, many of these albums have influenced my own studio set up and contribute to my composition style, so I felt it only right to recognise.

I was fortunate to see Robert Plant in the eighties on his Pledge Pin tour. They played most of this album at the concert, which I can only describe as fantastic! Jezz Woodroffe’s mastery of the synths was the ignition light I needed to buy my first synthesiser. The album has the excellent synth textured ‘Big Log’, a song which had a lot of radio 1 airplay along with a good run at the eighties nightclub scene. This album and Pledge Pin were solo Robert Plant at his height. ‘In the Mood’ is a personal favourite, ‘Thru With the Twostep’ is also excellent. The eighties solo Robert Plant delivered a very unique sound, no doubt founded on the quite clean guitar sound provided by Robbie Blunt along with subtle synth textures laid down by Jezz Woodroffe.
