Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some tracks can have several thousand ratings)
This track is rated in the top 1% of all tracks on BestEverAlbums.com. This track has a Bayesian average rating of 91.2/100, a mean average of 90.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 91.7/100. The standard deviation for this track is 13.5.

Perhaps a song should be rated as perfect if it moves you to tears, and then makes you want to repeatedly listen to it. It did that for me...I remember my parents playing this song as a young kid - it certainly intrigued me back then. I actually haven't heard this for many years, and nowadays it absolutely knocks my socks off. Kate delivers quirky, very high pitched vocals and amazing lyrics (quite obviously inspired by the book) to go with complex but crazy chord progressions and great rhythm. Superb musicianship all round - extra nod to the guitarist and bassist.
I get your point, but it's not the high-pitched ethereal vocal what botters me from this version. That I actually like, and like you say, it suits the mood of the song. What I don't like is the mixing. The voice gets too buried in the instrumental and it's hard to understand the lyrics, while the 1986 version is more polished and balanced. But hey, that's just one man's opinion. I know I am in the minority on this, and that's perfectly fine.
The high pitched ethereal vocal is perfect for this song, I think the point was missed when the vocal was re-done. One of the most amazing musical statements of all time.
I prefer the 1986 mix. Her voice sounds much better. But anyway, the song itself is brilliant.
Bold, brisk, brilliant. Such scale and awe. It takes one listen to get past the absurd vocals, after which there is no turning back. This is an absolute, timeless masterpiece.
One of the best songs of all time.
The chorus is amazing.
Her voice is from other world
I think that this is still the best selling single of all time in the UK? anyone from the UK know for sure? Or is it "Mull of Kyntire"(spelling)?
