Didn't see Prey, but All Quiet on the Western Front was absolutely a willful absence.

Is it a good war movie? Meh, if I hadn't seen 1917 or Come and See or either of the 1930/1979 versions already, maybe I would have enjoyed it, but I can't possibly rank it alongside any of those prior films.

Is it a good adaptation of the novel? Not even close. One of the worst book to screen adaptations I've seen lately. Maybe the English translation of Rohmer's book that I read took very very great liberties and therefore maybe Edward Berger did an excellent job of adapting it. But if my translation of the book was correct, then this new version totally fails to grasp what makes the book interesting, or even its very point, and simply slapped the name onto an obnoxious loud generic war movie.

Completely agree that this was an awful book-to-screen adaptation. That said, I thought it was effective as an anti-war movie. Certainly not as good as any of the other WWI films you mentioned (haven't seen Come and See and not even sure which war that focuses on), but I actually thought the dual narratives of Paul in the trenches and the diplomats negotiating armistice was was decent at representing how differently war touches everyone. AQotWF also retained THE trench scene which is so, so essential to the story and deeply disturbing and moving; that said, I think the 1930 and 1979 versions of that scene were significantly more effective and disturbing. The omission of Paul returning home was odd though, really glaring omission.

Yeah, I'm with Eye on a bit being a poor adaption but solid-to-semisolid film. I guess I'm kind of starved for war films because I wasn't adverse to any of the liberties taken.

I had a bad year with films in 2022. I need to see a few more but those I did watch were not great. From best to worst:
I want you back This was a very palatable rom com. Hardly outstanding but good for a night in.
This is Christmas As sentimental and formulaic as you’d expect, but done well.
The Northman Well made and atmospheric but too depressing for me ultimately.
The Lost City Pretty low brow action comedy. It doesn’t hold together but has it’s moments.
Everything, everywhere all at once Gave me a headache. There were some funny moments but it totally disregards storytelling. Cinema losing the plot.
Good luck to you Leo Grande It has been praised for the sex positivity but I found this one so dull and a bit too preachy.

No need to tally as I haven’t seen enough films. I just feel bad about cinema and wanted a rant I guess Laughing There must be films I’m missing (Banshees of Inisharin)but I’m struggling to find good storytelling from cinema these days.

I did love Phantom of the open, which I saw last year, but it’s not a 2022 film.

Y'got some time. Could always whip up a top ten by the deadline.

Interesting discourse on All Quiet On The Western Front. I also initially had some impartial feelings after watching it, but there was something about the film that stuck with me for an unusual amount of time (yet— I had no idea what it was— just kept running around my head). Despite the occasional anomaly (Son of Saul, Come And See, The Thin Red Line), I'm not really a battle-centric war-film person (usually it has to have a unique perspective, like Grave of The Fireflies, Army of Shadows, Pan's Labyrinth, Banshees, Casablanca, etc...)— wasn't in my top 50 of the year at all until I gave it a (slight) rewatch/skim. While it's undeniably another (unneeded) slice of 'war-porn'— we... have a lot of those... (and I'm sure people are still thinking about 1917)— I can't deny it as a cinematic spectacle. Visually, it's remarkable. Between the set designs, costume designs, make-up, cinematography, blocking— it captures the textures of WWI with gripping detail.

It's terrifying. Blunt. Brutal. Bleak. —and I understand the criticism that it's just another war movie we've all seen before/+ it kinda missed the moral of the original story— but I think from a production standpoint it's a true feat. While still being an anti-war film, the crucial complexity of the core ethics to the original are somewhat (and unfortunately) in the air, but I think had they been more true to the source material it would be a triumph.

Not one of my favourites of the year, but it'll land on my list. It's impressive work. And Felix Kammerer might even land my actors list.

(I've yet to give the film a score/review — would probably float between a 3.5 or 4/5)

Yeah— not a bad stretch for Colin Farrell as of late. Gave The North Water a watch last month— incredible performance in that too.

And thanks Bozo Smile Will tally. Working on my own acting lists but they're surprisingly safe/obvious at the moment— hoping to find some slightly more interesting picks this month (if not, is what it is— still happy with it).

It's funny, because after my rewatch of Banshees (which saw it jump about 10 spots up my list) I made note of that same phenomenon. He's arguably had one of the greatest years for an actor in...well, ever, really. My only immediate comparative example is 1967 for Sidney Poitier.

I really don't see what people see in the Weird Al movie and I'm a huge fan.
