This is really just a question that I'm curious about. How does a member become a data moderator and what exactly does a data moderator do?

I think it's a certain number of moderation points, 1000 I believe

Once you get 1,000 mod points, you become a data moderator. You keep your "powers" until you reach a certain number of rejected edits, and at that point you can lose your data moderator status.
As a data moderator, you can approve pending edits made by other users, and you can also make edits without needing to wait for them to be approved by another data moderator (because you youself are one). I hope this answers your question

Pretty much what the above people said, members become Data Moderators automatically once they reach 1,000 mod points (i.e. once people know how the system works & are confident making edits). Basically, these people have a few extra permissions which include editing locked items and not having to submit corrections.

After 30k+ points I still do not have the data mod functionality.
Is there a way to check one's status; whether the privelege was revoked? Or is there another requirement (total # of forum posts, for example), in addition to having 1000 points?

Forgot to mention in the previous post that 100 forum posts are also required (important that Data Moderators are 'known' to everybody else before they are able to override edits etc).

Wow I'm a data moderator but I must admit I was a bit lazy and my last mod dates from January.
But the strange thing is I have exactly a 1000 mods and this wasn't intentional at all
