Live-Evil by Miles Davis

April 23, 2024

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ ◈◈◈◈◈

Quote:
Some call this album Bitches Brew’s evil twin and I sorta agree. There are these pseudo-ambient short tracks that separate the gargantuan ones that have a sort of witchy flare. Also, the album art and run time make it easy to think why it’s Bitches Brew’s evil twin. If you look at my ratings so far for Miles’s fusion era, it’s no surprise I’m going to love this album.

Dreamtime Return by Steve Roach

April 23, 2024

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ ◈◈◈◈◈

Quote:
Going from a gargantuan jazz album to a mammoth ambient album. Dreamtime Return is generally accepted as one of Steve Roach’s best, and for good reason. It’s a really good blend of airy synthesizers with indigenous Australian traditional music. Incredibly ethereal and transcendent stuff. I don’t think there’s a bad time of day to listen to this. It’s a great morning album, but it’s also excellent for the evening. I think this is still my favorite Steve Roach record.

Electric Wizard by Electric Wizard

April 23, 2024

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ ◈◈◈◈◈

Quote:
Somewhat in the same vein as Summoning’s debut where it’s markedly less appreciated than its successors, but this one understandably more so. Electric Wizard is beloved for their absolutely heavy and gargantuan sound. It’s not as prevalent on this release. This is more—so heavier Sabbath worship. But it’s quite good! A little bit repetitive to make it somewhat hypnotic. I do prefer the chip on the shoulder of their best albums.

Starspawn by Blood Incantation

April 23, 2024

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ ◈◈◈◈◈

Quote:
What Blood Incantation offers for me is a great blend of cosmic death metal without falling down a progressive metal rabbit hole. Death is the one band I can think of that implements a perfect amount of progressive metal into their death metal without it being meandering at all. Blood Incantation is a more modern example. The atmosphere on this album is so deliciously cosmic. It’s only 4 death metal tracks long with a gentle interlude track before the finale (making it 5). It does leave me wanting more— a lot more.

Down On The Road By The Beach by Steve Hiett

Quote:
My oh my this album sounds sooooo scrumptious. The production is so excellent. A beautifully breezy guitar is the main hero of this album. This album sounds like the cool breeze on a summer’s day and I’ll just leave it at that.

Dub From The Roots by King Tubby

Quote:
This is a truly psychedelic dub album. I love how the bass sounds and the psychedelic sound effects that accompany the melodies. Spacey stuff that is excellent to relax to.

Singin' In The Heart by H.R.

April 24, 2024

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ ◈◈◈◈◈

Quote:
Not sure what I was thinking with my first listen. The first track was solid, but then the album goes into this weird 80s rock blend that it had no business doing. Nearly ruined the album. If it was 8 tracks of actual reggae, this could’ve been a great record, but it’s only 6 tracks with two weird rock songs on the B side.

This just wasn’t as engaging as I remembered. I thought I remembered really getting into this album, but it just didn’t sink me in as much as I’d hope. Still pretty good reggae regardless.

Two Sevens Clash by Culture

April 24, 2024

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ ◈◈◈◈◈

Quote:
Of the three vocal reggae albums I listened to today (plus a new one I never heard making 4), this had the most captivating lyrics and vocal performance in my opinion. It’s not an instrumentally layered record, but when you add a touching vocal performance everything feels deeper. Very glad I ended this short streak of reggae on a strong note. I loved this record enough to purchase a copy.

Minas Morgul by Summoning

Quote:
Damn, I was hoping this would be a grower. However I think their debut edges this one out. Some of the dungeon synth is kinda tacky and the aggressive parts didn’t hit as hard as I’d hope. Still, this is some genuinely epic black metal.
