Just a thought, but maybe a character minimum on comments for artists/albums/tracks would help a) keep quality of comments higher, and b) motivate users inclined to spam-comment find something worthwhile to do with their lives

Suggested before, but has certain issues that people can get around easily enough (if they are so inclined). I seem to remember that this had been suggested before, but that there were some issues that were found to be easily enough got around (should the aforementioned people prove to be thus inclined). Not sure though.

Also, not all short comments are spam.
However, I can pick up broader trends e.g. if a single user has posted 30 comments in the last 10 minutes with 30 characters or less. Those types of situations can be dealt with in other ways as there are site rules in place regarding spamming for points which can result in bans in the most serious cases.
Only comments with -2 votes or higher are counted for the purposes of points, so another way to deal with spam comments is for people to vote them down.
