Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 64.6/100, a mean average of 61.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 63.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 18.8.

How was Billy Corgan so confident that this would work out? No Past, No Future, No Sun? More like No Past, No Guitar, No Depth.
This album is just way too long and really doesn't have the substance or track quality to warrant it being 72 minutes. More than half the tracks are filler or some even bad. The choruses aren't catchy and sound hollow and empty in most of the cuts and like the artist is out of ideas. The instrumentation just feels soulless and repetitive and just a bit dull. However, it isn't all doom and gloom on this record as it does create a very dark pop atmosphere which is consistently maintained and it is interesting to see the Pumpkins perform in this style as it is completely unique from their other records. Furthermore, there are a few singles which are actually really good as well and a couple deep cuts you can discover which provide a lot of entertainment. Overall, as a huge fan of the Pumpkins it is disappointing to say that this record isn't very good and by the sound of it there isn't much hope for the future either.
I held off on writing something about this album when it first came out. I enjoyed it but couldn't quite articulate why. A year later I have returned to this album which I think is a sign itself that I had a desire to come back. It doesn't really sound like pumpkins, it's gothic and kind of poppy. But that's honestly a sound that I think the group pulls of in an interesting and kind of unique way.
Pretty annoying to be honest. They're stuck in their patterns and seem to have lost inspiration, but eternal respect for what they've released in the 90s.
Dear Billy
When you read this and I know you will I just want to say thanks for the memories with ‘Gish’ , ‘Siamese Dream’ and ‘Mellon Collie’ near and dear to my heart as some of my all time favourite recordings , hell I even gave ‘Adore’ a go and even went so far as to see you on the Adore Tour when it rolled into Melbourne ( that was me in row 48 seat D ). But let’s be honest it’s been a long time since you released anything decent both as a solo artist or under the Smashing Pumpkins moniker ( which is the same thing you aren’t fooling nobody) with each release becoming more bombastic and soulless and quite frankly ‘Cyr’ is simply more of the same only worse as its a double album of bombastic soulless tripe. Yes I gave ‘Cry’ a go - I listened to the entire 20 songs twice all 72 minutes of the entire thing .. twice
So dear friend it is here we must part ways for good as you join the ranks of artists I once loved now permanently divorced (Weezer , Green Day)
Its not me its you
Kind regards
Brad
PS: Forgot to mention ‘Pisces Iscariot’ I really dig that album it reminds me of the time (1994) when even your B Sides and Demos were great
I dunno this is the best they've sounded since Machina even though it's more like the lovely and dark underrated Adore. Zeitgeist was fine but generic, Oceania was a vast improvement, Monuments was pretty cool and Shiny was quite nice but Cyr has more heart and creativity. There's just something about it that finally gets me excited about the Pumpkins again. This is kind of an epic sequel to Adore.
Congratulations are in order for Adore, who just gave birth to this album XD
