Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 24% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.7/100, a mean average of 75.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.7.

(Yet another standout Singer/Songwriter album in the Indie Pop, Indie Rock, Soft Rock vein. Its a well made album start to finish, an album where every aspect of its sound is crystalline and intentional and executed beautifully. Highly recommended of course.)
In a young year that has already featured some great female singer/songwriter albums from the likes of Lana Del Rey, Julian Baker, Lia Ices, Arlo Parks, Anneke Van Giersbergen, Cassandra Jenkins, Indigo Spark, Danielle Durack and many more, this excellent album shows up to challenge all of 'em for best of the bunch. It's production - especially the low end and the bass parts - is absolutely beautiful, the vocals whether warbly and affected or clean are always tender and touching and the lyrics are the just the right balance of romantic and lovesick.
The loungey, jazzy vibe of some of these songs is very seductive and a joy to listen to. The band that she got in the studio (should research to see who they were) is stellar, the drummer is crisp and the bassist holds it down while also occasionally stealing the show with some sick bass part. And the all the extra fillips from the keytboards, the various horns and the chamber-y (lol fake words I need to stop thinking adding a Y at the end of words is the right move.) bits are all nicely done.
But, obviously, the star is Alice Phoebe friggin Lou. She performs all these songs with such personality, and an immense sense of melody, she really kills it as a vocalistr. And lyrically, although on the surface quite plain and romantic, are well written and express that indecisiveness, that romantic vacillation that is so universal.
Despite being a peer of the batch of great songwriters who emerged these last few years (the Bridgers, Baker, Dacus crew) I feel as of now APL has not gotten nearly the same level of attention. I feel she deserves it. She's just a fully formed, assured and excellent artist. This is her best album yet.
