Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 12% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.7/100, a mean average of 73.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.4.

Quizás con el tiempo ha caído en el olvido, pero este es, al menos para mí, uno de los mejores discos de los 70.

A really consistent album that I thoroughly enjoyed. Certainly the album is dominated by its opening title track which should be familiar to most. However, there are some other very good tracks on this album including the magnificent Vincent. Some brilliant narratives told in some beautiful songs.

Unlike so many, I'm not in thrall to the title track. But I think Vincent is just sheer beauty, and there are others here along that line. Maybe doesn't stand up to being the classic it is regarded as, but a gentle listening experience none the less.

brilliant music. Every song is great even if some are definitely better than others.

Clearly underrated album. I agree with @arialblue. American Pie and Vincent are extraordinary, heartbreaking, and the rest is pleasant enough.

Before giving this album a proper whirl, I was of a similar opinion to several reviewers here - other than the title track and Vincent, a little insipid. But when I gave it a proper chance, I came to realise that it's actually a brilliant listen. I found myself thinking it was tailing off a little towards the end, but then checked myself as the tracks were still really good, just not quite as good as those which had come before. Don McLean's guitar playing is superb, and his vocals, whilst at their peak on the two aforementioned tracks, are excellent throughout. Don't be put off by the threat of the title track - the rest of the album is worthy of your time too.
Best tracks: American Pie, Vincent, Crossroads, Winter Wood, Everybody Loves Me, Baby.

not much besides the title song worth listening to on this record.

It's very nice and competent, but also a little dull. Kind of harmless really but pleasant enough while it plays.
