Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 61.6/100, a mean average of 61.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 61.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 19.2.

Better than most think.
Besides the brilliant Under Pressure, the album remains forgettable.
Ok, I feel like I should add a voice to those who say that this album is good, because it is and I feel like it has been thrashed way too much by people who don't get it.
This might be a different Queen sound than 70's Queen, but come on, it still definitely sounds like Queen. The songwriting skills are still there, the producing is amazing, even better than some of their 70's stuff, and the musicianship is still at display.
I guess the hate comes a lot from the disco haters of the early 80's that immediately dismissed this album as "disco". But come on, this album is so much more than that. It's Queen experimenting with new sounds and succeeding in creating something new, all the while staying true to their greatest qualities. This album is good and I think it has aged really really well.
I almost skipped this album because of all the hate I had read about. I'm so glad I gave it a chance! Don't overlook Hot Space my friends, it's a good album!!!
Mais dançante e sintéticos.

Hot Space is superficially unappealing, especially the disco-based material that dominates the first side, substantively at least they’re exploring new territory and don’t exhibit any real decrease in creativity. Still, there’s no reason why anyone in their right mind would prefer this to any of Queen’s seventies albums.
I'm with Gary! Before anyone calls me a knob :) or says my comment is unhelpful let me try and put it in context. I am extremely respectful of what Queen achieved, Freddie was one of the very best showmen with a unique voice, and as a band I am absolutely aware they released some of the most iconic singles ever, but, first and foremost I am a mad keen 80's synth fan, rather than a mad keen Queen fan. The positives with this apart from the synth element are that all the main vocals are Freddie's, and there are no long indulgent guitar solos'. For me, too many of their earlier albums contained too much quirkiness, with, in the main, the singles standing out. On those albums I feel they were trying to be Beatle-like, not in sound necassarily, but the need to have no one singer and some almost oddball tracks. So, for the reasons given this is one of the Queen albums I am most likely to listen to. It is consistent too, now whether you think it's consistently good or bad is down to your musical taste. Anyone liking synth may want to pay a visit to this album, it could surprise you.
Probably the worst Queen's album ever, but with a fantastic sound and mix.
Am i one of the very few who think this an excellent album. It's my third favourite Queen album after 'opera' and 'sheer'. I think side one is amazing, especially staying power, body language and action this day. My only complaint is the whole album hasn't got the white funk sound. Having said that, side two has some really good tracks, the cool funk of cool cat, Freddie's answer to Lennon's imagine, life is real, and off course the brilliant Bowie collaboration under pressure. You may have heard some negative views on hot space but it really stands up well today.
They had their own interpretation of Glam eight years before, this was their take on Disco-Funk. It worked both times, which means: it was controversial both times.
