Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 79.6/100, a mean average of 79.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 80.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.4.

Of all the albums I've reviewed lately based on first impressions, this one has blown me away the most—beautiful, engaging melodies put together by John Tout's worldly keys and Annie Haslam's soothing voice, all in a digestible prog rock style. The entire album is wonderful, but the opening Can You Understand? in particular is fantastic—that opening piano intro had my attention immediately. And the album also sounds extremely clean and polished, which wasn't always the case for every record coming out in 1973. Needless to say, I'll be revisiting this one frequently.

This album is bookended by two incredible songs: the band words overtime to deliver a bold instrumental opening in the first song, and Haslam's vocals in the last song are divine. Sandwiched between the two are some decent folk/symphonic tunes, including the shoulda-been-a-hit Carpet of the Sun.
