Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.1/100, a mean average of 71.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 18.9.

Excellent, if not sad album. In my opinion, his best solo work, beautifully crafted and delivered. If you listen to this back to back with early Wham, it is clear to hear the shift in maturity resultant from life’s harsh knocks. I do like both eras in equal measure, Wham for the upbeat, carefree albums and nod to exciting times ahead, which never really materialised and his solo work for its more mature and somber message resultant from the path his life took.
Let's face it....this is classy!
I just played this album for the first time in a long time. My charts are wrong, this should be way higher.
The best album that George made throughout his entire discography. An album that shows a pop star from the 80's show a sense of maturity and having honesty through a hardship that never went away until his unfortunate death. This album has aged pretty well with the production having a twilight and opulent quality and the instrumentation that runs through jazz, funk, soul and down tempo. Best songs from this album are Older, Spinning the Wheel, It Doesn't Really Matter, Move On and You Have Been Loved.
George Michaels most moving & sad album beautifully written & sung with great emotion. The songs Jesus To A Child, You Have Been Loved & To Be Forgiven were influenced by the recent death of his lover. There are also some mid tempo songs such as Fastlove & Star People both hit singles and the title track & The Strangest Thing & Spin The Wheel are also 3 of the best songs he has written. R.I.P.
Back in the UK in 1996 this album was a very very big deal. It has for the most part stood the test of time (so far). Gorgeous playing and production. The guy's decline from this pinnacle has been shocking and sad. You had to be there.
Not best ever, but shows a growth and maturity often lacking in commercial pop. Well done.
The best pop album ever
