Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.9/100, a mean average of 70.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.3.

A dark cloud hangs over Poco's fifth studio album.

First is the theme of Ingram "Gram" Parsons, the monumental figure who inspired the West Coast country-rock scene. His song Brass Buttons is covered here, sung by original Poco member Richie Furay. Furay also sings his original song Crazy Eyes, written about Parsons, who curiously died suddenly days after this album was released. Furay had private plans to leave the group during the recording of the album and performed his last show with the band days before the album was released. Furay would join the band briefly for the hit album Legacy in 1989.

So this Poco LP gets plenty of recognition and understandably so.After the false start of Blue Water and the bluegrass instrumental Fools Gold, the band gets right down to business with Tim Schmit's excellent single Here We Go Again, then an interesting cover of Brass Buttons, written by Gram Parsons and a slide guitar rocker that borders on southern rock from Paul Cotten.

Side 2 is sublime and probably the finest side ever cut on a Poco album. First is the epic title track, followed by the excellent cover of J.J. Cale's Magnolia, sung by Cotten, with a beautiful saxophone solo to boot, and a sentimental wrap-up with Furay's Let's Dance Tonight.

This LP has nice compositions from every member of the band, minus drummer and background vocalist George Grantham. Furay contributes Let's Dance Tonight and the title track, Paul Cotten wrote Blue Water and A Right Along, Tim Schmit wrote the excellent Here We Go Again and instrumentalist-not-yet-songwriter Rusty Young composes the instrumental Fool's Gold.

Certainly, Crazy Eyes is one of Poco's most rewarding LPs.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

RICHIE FURAY: Crazy Eyes
PAUL COTTON: A Right Along
TIM SCHMIT: Here We Go Again

Also Check Out Magnolia (JJ Cale, sung by Paul Cotten)
