I guess if you can't be original, the next best thing is to copy a successful act like The Smashing Pumpkins.
I personally disagree with the comparison, but people debating it kept Silversun Pickups relevant for a couple albums.
Their change in sound is now generic and sounds comparably to no band of memorable worth or value. Against their Better Nature, they live amongst the weeds of average bands now. Too bad so sad.
Take their first 2 albums or their 12 best songs. Either is of musical value compared to this waste of time.
