This is the earliest memory I have of any album. This is what my parents would play for us when we were still in elementary school. I remember at one point the album got scratched so that it wouldn't play beyond the middle of track 14. I found the old CD a year ago and it was totally unplayable. There were actually a few other Beach Boys compilations that we collected between Made in U.S.A. and this one, but as soon as we got this one it became the only one we ever listened to (except, once, we listened to Pet Sounds, and we all decided that we didn't like it). Road trips had this on repeat. [First added to this chart: 03/06/2013]

During my middle school years, my dad decided to show me music a little more complex than the Beach Boys. He showed me Autobahn and Trans-Europe Express, but this was by far my favorite. "Pocket Calculator" was my jam! [First added to this chart: 03/06/2013]

This was the first album that was truly mine. I kept humming the riff from "Smoke on the Water" after I played it at a friend's house on Guitar Hero, so my dad bought this for me. A little bit later, he also got me the "Paranoid" single, which included that and "Iron Man". [First added to this chart: 03/06/2013]

I think my cousins introduced me to the song "Move Along", and I was hooked. I remember finding some free music service called SpiralFrog and promptly getting this entire album. Later, I bought the whole album from the Barnes and Noble. This was the only album I listened to my freshman year of high school. [First added to this chart: 03/06/2013]

One day at my computer, I decided to look up the music video for the song "Paparazzi" by Lady Gaga. I listened to it, and the universe opened up. So THIS is why people like music so much. I was addicted to this song (I still love it). This started my pop phase, in which my favorite artists were Gaga, Katy Perry, and Ke$ha. (Sophomore year of high school). One day, while listening to Pandora radio, the song "Yesterday" by the Beatles came up. Didn't think much of it at the time, but a few months later at a summer camp, the song reemerged in my head and would not leave. For three days straight, I sang this song. I asked my dad to send me the album with "Yesterday" on it, so he sent me Help! and Revolver (his favorite Beatles album). I obviously preferred the latter, and it became my favorite album. The Beatles WERE my junior year of high school. [First added to this chart: 03/06/2013]

As I became totally inundated in the Beatles, and the concept of "critically acclaimed" music, I realized that the music of my childhood was actually profoundly good. I searched out our old copy of Pet Sounds, and fell in love. I'd only heard "God Only Knows" 2-3 times before, because my mom insisted it was taking God's name in vain, so she'd always made us skip it. It eventually (although temporarily) became my favorite song. This album was at the #2 position for a while, but it eventually became my favorite album. [First added to this chart: 03/06/2013]

Before this album, I had shifted completely to listening to old music. However, one day I was listening to "Boombox" by the Lonely Island and realized I was really digging the featured artist, Julian Casablancas. I looked up his solo song "11th Dimension" and fell in love with it, as well as his solo album. After reading that his band, the Strokes, were critically acclaimed (I saw that NME had rated it the #1 album of the decade) I purchased it and started listening. The stylistic choices were difficult for me to get into at first, but eventually it grew on me, and remains one of my favorites to this day. [First added to this chart: 03/06/2013]

I discovered Radiohead via BEA. I remember stumbling upon this list of "best albums" and being dumbfounded that the top rated album was by the band I only knew from "that one episode of South Park." I was curious, so I made an account and started listening to Radiohead. I liked OK Computer pretty immediately, but Kid A took many listens. When I finally "got" it, it became my second favorite album almost immediately. Still an amazing album. (This was around the summer before my senior year of high school.) At this point, my taste blossomed beautifully, and any attempt to follow it via a linear trajectory would be futile and composed of patchy guesswork. [First added to this chart: 03/06/2013]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 2% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 90.0/100, a mean average of 93.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 93.1/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 9.3.
