Dream Theater by AAL2014

One of the bands I've been into for a very long time. Mike Portnoy influenced me as a drummer more than just about anyone. I fell in love by hearing Scenes From a Memory after plucking it out of my dad's album collection. My friends in my first band turned me on to Octavarium and we would listen to it all the way through. I discovered the rest of the catalog soon after.

For anyone unsure of this band, just give them a well deserved listen. Prog or prog metal may not be your cup of tea, but these guys have great songwriting abilities to accompany their instrumental prowess. Dream Theater will always have one of my favorite back catalogs and I will always consider them an influence, but they are starting to lose me with their last couple albums. The Astonishing is anything but. I hope to always be a fan of this band be it Mike Portnoy or Mike Mangini.. Dream Theater is one of the greats.

The last DT record to feature the brilliant Mike Portnoy is a great one. A bit verbose and lacking in creativity but still some great and heavy moments. [First added to this chart: 03/22/2019]

I was very happy to listen to the brand new Distance Over Time the day it was released and be surprised with how much I liked it. After the last two DT records have been essentially their worst ever, Distance Over Time felt like a much more refreshed band and one that reclaimed some of their lightning-strike like charm in some of their recent writing efforts.

Distance Over Time is not without flaws though as by the time I was 3 quarters through the album, some transitions and even overall arrangements became so predictable I laughed about it. Some lyrics and the delivery of them on this record felt like the worst of possibly any Dream Theater album, and Out of Reach IS THE WORST DREAM THEATER BALLAD IN THE CANON.

Not as bad as may fans may claim. Certainly different than much of DT's other albums though. It is also way too fucking long. There are some really weak tracks they could have cut out, but Hollow Years, Peruvian Skies, and the incredible Trial of Tears are standouts. [First added to this chart: 03/22/2019]

Where Dream Theater started involving Mike Mangini in the songwriting and started getting (for me and my ears) banal in songwriting and production.

A few good songs, a decent epic, and the tour gave my friends and I one of the greatest shows we’ve ever seen from anybody.. but the record itself isn’t very enjoyable to listen to.

Hey LedZep. Thanks for your interest in my charts, very honored to hear that from a member like yourself who has great taste and wonderful charts as well. Many of my charts are incomplete, others are just always going to be works in progress.

As for this chart, The Astonishing does nothing for me. There are a lot of people who love it and many who were floored by the live show of it. I attended their Detroit show fully aware of what I was getting. I had listened to disc 1 previously, bored to death telling myself I'll get to disc 2 at some point before the show comes. Well, I didn't. At the show, the lights which corresponded with the technical rhythms were impeccable and the stage looked very unique however live, the music came out as lifeless as it did on my CD. Aaaaand my friends and I took off at intermission. Still haven't heard disc 2 and I don't give a shit enough at the moment to do so. I'm sure I will at some point, but man it's a bummer of a record. Ambitious, yes, but perhaps a bit too much.

Astonishing is really THAT bad? I've been browsing your charts today and I like your taste very much and I haven't listened to Astonishing yet...
