It almost feels wrong that I listened to this album. I feel like I just came across someone's diary and read the whole thing. Last year, Phil Elverum's wife died of pancreatic cancer, and this album is essentially him trying to deal with it, trying to process the whole thing. Elverum is trying to understand grief, trying to come to grips with the fact that his wife is dead, while simultaneously dealing with the fact that he has a young daughter (she's currently around two-years-old) he has to be there for, and it's heart-wrenching. I don't think I'm going to be coming back to this album frequently, but man if this isn't one of the most emotionally moving, powerful albums I have ever heard. The stream-of-consciousness lyrics give off this feeling of "I don't know what is happening and I'm not prepared for this." How open and honest this album is is almost startling. Elverum doesn't go on some grand, vague talk about life and death, he's specific, this is his daily life, and I think it's the fact that he talks about all these little things (like seeing the rain and thinking about how the last time it was raining, his wife was alive) that makes this album so relatable and so emotionally evocative. It's an incredibly moving experience, but one that's worth having. [First added to this chart: 06/08/2017]

Susanne Sundfor is just magical as far as I'm concerned. Ten Love Songs was an incredible album and Music For People In Trouble is almost as good as Ten Love Songs. It's a bit more of a departure in that it's more folky than it is synthy, but it's still absolutely beautiful. [First added to this chart: 10/03/2017]

This album is gorgeous, hypnotic music that's somewhere between ambient and post-rock (Pitchfork calls it "country post-rock"). Johnson uses his pedal steel to envelop you in lush soundscapes that sound very Harold Budd-like. It reminds me a lot of Daniel Lanois' album from last year (which was also fantastic). But yea, I can't recommend this highly enough, it's a really wonderful album. [First added to this chart: 08/23/2017]

Bing & Ruth are just too good. They created one of my five favorite albums of the year, and still one of my favorite ambient albums, in 2014 with Tomorrow Was The Golden Age, and now they've created another masterpiece with No Home Of The Mind. This album is so powerful, so emotionally evocative, it wrings joy and pain through a piano, it's a powerful experience. This is a bold, almost cinematic piece, recorded on seventeen different pianos. It flows from electroacoustic minimalism to ambient maximalism, and it flows seamlessly. Yet another reason to love Bing & Ruth. [First added to this chart: 03/02/2017]

Lawrence English is able to create some gorgeous, sprawling soundscapes on this album. This album envelops and completely absorbs you, and if you close your eyes and immerse yourself in it, you'll find it to be an incredibly rewarding experience. Some tracks have somewhat of a driving intensity to them, while others are a bit calmer, but as a whole, coherent piece, Cruel Optimism is nothing short of excellent. This album is a mesmerizing eight tracks of killer death metal. I think what I love most about this album is just about every song is carefully crafted, you can tell that there are no wasted notes, each avenue they explore is important and fully explored. The guitar work is excellent, every solo is killer and is so much more than just mindless shredding. It calls back to early 90s death metal, the way the solos are played. It's an excellent album from top to bottom and will definitely be one of the best metal albums this year. [First added to this chart: 02/24/2017]

While I would say that this album is weaker than both Good Kid Maad City and To Pimp A Butterfly, those are exceptionally high bars to measure it to. Damn is a very well-done album, and quite an interesting statement. While it may lean more towards traditional hip-hop than TPAB did, it's still very much Kendrick, and his lyrics are just as strong as ever. Kendrick's music has always been about storytelling, and he does it exceptionally well. GKMC was about him growing up in Compton trying to be a decent person, TPAB was about Kendrick dealing with his inner self and being a positive black role model, Damn is something different. Damn is about choice, it's about choosing the path of damnation or the path of salvation. It's about learning to be humble and being a good person, or being egotistical and self-serving. There's all kinds of theories about what this album is truly about, but that's what it was to me. Regardless, even if it may be inferior to GKMC or TPAB, Damn is exceptional and will without a doubt be one of the best hip-hop albums of the year. [First added to this chart: 04/24/2017]

It's been about five years since Helplessness Blues came out and now Fleet Foxes are back and they've changed a bit. Or I guess it's really Robin Pecknold that's changed. He's done a lot of soul-searching during Fleet Foxes' hiatus and it shows. This album is a lot darker than anything else Fleet Foxes have done before, but it works, and it's given us a very well-made, focused album. [First added to this chart: 07/12/2017]

A Pink Sunset For No One is a sublime piece of work. It's a patient, well thought out piece that is completely coherent and makes for quite an experience. Sarah Lipstate (Noveller) has an incredible command of mood, and is able to create tracks that sound almost fragile, but still make an impact. Tracks like "Another Dark Hour" are hauntingly beautiful, never fully exposing themselves to you. It's an excellent piece of work that flows together very well. Like always a very eclectic choice. I only know two albums in your list but makes me want to listen to the rest. I'm listening to the seven pigs as I'm typing this: from the first track I don't know yet: the second is already more appealing...
